Secession winter : when the Union fell apart / by Cook, Robert J.,1958-(CARDINAL)304725; Barney, William L.(CARDINAL)282949; Varon, Elizabeth R.,1963-(CARDINAL)302346; Roll, Jarod.(CARDINAL)315551;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 91-103) and index.Introduction : the secession crisis as a study in conflict resolution -- Rush to disaster : secession and the slaves' revenge / William L. Barney -- "Save in defense of my native state" : a new look at Robert E. Lee's cecision to join the Confederacy / Elizabeth R. Varon -- "Their object is to hide the truth" : historical memory and the coming of the American Civil War / Robert J. Cook.Politicians and opinion leaders on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line struggled to formulate coherent responses to the secession of the Deep South states in December 1860 and early 1861. Then a confederate attack on Fort Sumter in mid-April 1861 triggered civil war and prompted the departure of four Upper South States from the Union. Here three senior historians explore the robust debates that took place between these momentous events. For five months in the winter of 1860-61, Americans did not know for certain that war was upon them. Some hoped for a compromise; others wanted a fight. Many struggled to understand what was happening to their country. Robert J. Cook, William L. Arney, and Elizabeth R. Varon take approaches to this period that combine political, economic, and social-cultural lines of analysis. Rather than focus on whether civil conflict was inevitable, they look at the political parties, whites and nonwhites, elites and masses, men and women. Every individual, Northern and Southern had to make a sometimes painful decision. The authors include the voices of Unionists and Whig Party moderates who had much to lose and upcountry folk who owned no slaves and did not particularly like those who did. Barney contends that white southerners were driven to secede by anxiety and guilt over slavery. Varon takes a new look at Robert E. Lee's decision to cast his lot with the confederacy. Cook demonstrate how both Northern and Southern politicians claimed the rightness of their cause by constructing selective narratives of historical grievances. Secession Winter explores the fact of contingency and reminds readers and students that nothing was foreordained. -- Back cover.

American secession : the looming threat of a national breakup / by Buckley, F. H.(Francis H.),1948-author.(CARDINAL)724992;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 147-162) and index.One nation, divisible -- When secession is politically correct -- Secession : a how to guide -- Bigness and badness -- Bigness and happiness -- Bigness and corruption -- Bigness and the military -- Bigness and freedom -- Bigness and wealth -- Secession lite -- Home rule -- Everything that rises must converge."Americans have never been more divided, and we're ripe for a breakup. The bitterness, the gridlock, the growing tolerance of violence, invite us to think that we'd be happier were we two different countries. In all the ways that matter, save for the naked force of law, we are already two nations. There's a second reason why secession beckons. We're over-big, one of the biggest countries in the world. Smaller countries are happier and less corrupt. They're less inclined to throw their weight around militarily, and they're freer. If there are advantages to bigness, the costs exceed the benefits. Bigness is badness. Across the world, just about every country is staring down a secession movement. Many have already split apart. And are we to think that, almost alone in the world, we're immune from this? Or that the Civil War made secession impossible? If so, this book explodes those comforting beliefs, and shows just how easy it would be for a state to exit the union if that's what its voters wanted"--
