Endless fall : a little chronicle / by Leftah, Mohamed,Author(DLC)no 97053917 ; Sikelianos, Eleni,Translator(DLC)no 97010939;
"In this poignant account of a classmate's suicide, the acclaimed Moroccan author gives both a biting critique of small-town bigotry in the 1960s and a moving tribute to the fleeting beauty of adolescence. In Settat in the 1960s, when it was still a tiny village, a young man leapt to his death in front of his stunned class and their teacher, left holding a brief, devastating suicide note. Among the students was Mohamed Leftah. Haunted by the uncommon grace of that desperate act, and the tragic image of his body lying in the courtyard, Leftah penned this chronicle of life at the time, marked by repressed desire and shame. A fiery yet thoughtful meditation on taboo acts - homosexuality, adultery, suicide - and the hypocrisy and cruelty often found in those who judge them, Endless Fall also offers a fascinating window into the mind of the seminal writer"--.

The (new) great transformation ; Economics and culture ; The elusive quest of happiness ; The double bind of work and autonomy ; Social endogamy."Leading economist Daniel Cohen provides a whirlwind tour of the history of economic growth, from the early days of civilization to modern times, underscoring what is so unsettling today. The new digital economy is establishing a "zero-cost" production model, inexpensive software is taking over basic tasks, and years of exploiting the natural world have begun to backfire with deadly consequences. Working hard no longer guarantees social inclusion or income. Drawing on economics, anthropology, and psychology, and thinkers ranging from Rousseau to Keynes and Easterlin, Cohen examines how a future less dependent on material gain might be considered and, how, in a culture of competition, individual desires might be better attuned to the greater needs of society."--Publisher's description.

The quantum and the lotus : a journey to the frontiers where science and Buddhism meet / by Ricard, Matthieu.(CARDINAL)354987; Trinh, Xuan Thuan.(CARDINAL)756382;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 283-296) and index.At the crossroads -- To be and not to be -- In search of the great watchmaker -- The universe in a grain of sand -- Mirages of reality -- Like a bolt from the blue -- Each to his own reality -- Questions of time -- Chaos and harmony -- The virtual frontier -- Robots that think they can think? -- The grammar of the universe -- Reason and contemplation -- Beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- From meditation to action -- The monk's conclusion -- The scientist's conclusion.Matthieu Ricard trained as a molecular biologist, working in the lab of a Nobel prize'winning scientist, but when he read some Buddhist philosophy, he became drawn to Buddhism. Eventually he left his life in science to study with Tibetan teachers, and he is now a Buddhist monk and translator for the Dalai Lama, living in the Shechen monastery near Kathmandu in Nepal. Trinh Thuan was born into a Buddhist family in Vietnam but became intrigued by the explosion of discoveries in astronomy during the 1960s. He made his way to the prestigious California Institute of Technology to study with some of the biggest names in the field and is now an acclaimed astrophysicist and specialist on how the galaxies formed. When Matthieu Ricard and Trinh Thuan met at an academic conference in the summer of 1997, they began discussing the many remarkable connections between the teachings of Buddhism and the findings of recent science. That conversation grew into an astonishing correspondence exploring a series of fascinating questions. Did the universe have a beginning' Or is our universe one in a series of infinite universes with no end and no beginning' Is the concept of a beginning of time fundamentally flawed' Might our perception of time in fact be an illusion, a phenomenon created in our brains that has no ultimate reality' Is the stunning fine-tuning of the universe, which has produced just the right conditions for life to evolve, a sign that a "principle of creation" is at work in our world' If such a principle of creation undergirds the workings of the universe, what does that tell us about whether or not there is a divine Creator' How does the radical interpretation of reality offered by quantum physics conform to and yet differ from the Buddhist conception of reality' What is consciousness and how did it evolve' Can consciousness exist apart from a brain generating it' The stimulating journey of discovery the authors traveled in their discussions is re-created beautifully in The Quantum and the Lotus, written in the style of a lively dialogue between friends. Both the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and the discoveries of contemporary science are introduced with great clarity, and the reader will be profoundly impressed by the many correspondences between the two streams of thought and revelation. Through the course of their dialogue, the authors reach a remarkable meeting of minds, ultimately offering a vital new understanding of the many ways in which science and Buddhism confirm and complement each other and of the ways in which, as Matthieu Ricard writes, "knowledge of our spirits and knowledge of the world are mutually enlightening and empowering."

Un rêve d'Italie : la collection du marquis Campana / by Gaultier, Françoise,editor.(CARDINAL)784865; Haumesser, Laurent,editor.(CARDINAL)784864; Trofimova, Anna A.,editor.(CARDINAL)784863; Musée du Louvre,host institution.(CARDINAL)150431;
Includes bibliographical references and indexes.The Musée du Louvre and the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg are joining forces for an outstanding exhibition based on the collection built up by the Marquis Campana mostly between the 1830s and the 1850s. The Louvre Museum and the Hermitage Museum join forces for an exceptional exhibition on the very rich collection of the Marquis Campana, essentially constituted between the 1830s and the 1850s. With this collection, the most ambitious private collection of the 19th century, the Marquis Campana intended to give an image of the Italian cultural heritage, both ancient and modern. But the collection was seized after a resounding trial for embezzlement which was brought in 1857 and sold by the pontifical state. Its dispersion across Europe has aroused an emotion that testifies to its importance in Italian and European cultural consciousness. Major works of the collection were acquired in 1861 by Tsar Alexander II and came to enrich the collections of the Hermitage Museum. The rest - more than 10,000 items - was bought by Napoleon III and shared between the Louvre Museum and many provincial museums.
