- Totally unofficial : the autobiography of Raphael Lemkin / by Lemkin, Raphael,1900-1959.(CARDINAL)267278; Frieze, Donna-Lee.(CARDINAL)402658;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Among the greatest intellectual heroes of modern times, Raphael Lemkin lived an extraordinary life of struggle and hardship, yet altered international law and redefined the world's understanding of group rights. He invented the concept and word "genocide" and propelled the idea into international legal status. An uncommonly creative pioneer in ethical thought, he twice was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Although Lemkin died alone and in poverty, he left behind a model for a life of activism, a legacy of major contributions to international law, and--not least--an unpublished autobiography. Presented here for the first time is his own account of his life, from his boyhood on a small farm in Poland with his Jewish parents, to his perilous escape from Nazi Europe, through his arrival in the United States and rise to influence as an academic, thinker, and revered lawyer of international criminal law"--"Life and work of Raphael Lemkin, who immigrated to the U.S. during World War II and made it his life's work to fight genocide, a term he coined, with the might of the U.N. Genocide Convention"--

- Joan Miró : wall / frieze / mural / by Miró, Joan,1893-1983,artist.(CARDINAL)140073; Terry, Judith,translator.(CARDINAL)808529; Opstelten, Bram,translator.(CARDINAL)895836; Kunsthaus Zürich,host institution.(CARDINAL)154818; Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt,host institution.(CARDINAL)184652; Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft,editor.(CARDINAL)893165;
Includes bibliographical references.Introduction / Simonetta Fraquelli -- 'This boy's going to go places' / Carolyn Lanchner -- In the wake of Miró's murals : the five triptychs / Joan Punyet Miró -- Miró and the metaphor of the wall / William Jeffett -- A collaborative venture : Miró's ceramic mural for the Kunsthaus Zürich / Simonetta Fraquelli -- Plates.The publication presents Joan Mirós (1893-1983) mural art in the context of his lifes work. Mirós ideas for large-scale mural art can be traced back to his works of the 1920s and the inspiration he drew from the bare walls of his family home in Montroig (Catalonia) and those of his studio in Paris. Miró gave priority to simple and essential forms, and declared the wall to be the very essence of his imagery. With its imperfections, it became the starting point for pictures in which Miró recorded its material beauty with meticulous attention to detail and great poetry. This book, and the exhibition it accompanies, takes its cue from the Kunsthaus Zurichs mural Oiseaux qui s'envolent, which will be the subject of a long overdue evaluation.
