Operation Basalt : the British raid on Sark and Hitler's commando order / by Lee, Eric,1955-author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Operation Basalt was a raid carried out by British commandos on the island of Sark on the night of October 3-4, 1942. It was intended to reassure Channel Islanders that they had not been forgotten following their German occupation, to force the Germans to deploy resources, and to gain intelligence through German prisoners. Thought a tactical success, the raid remains mired in controversy, remembered because of Hitlers reaction. Three days after the raid, he issued this order: "In future, all terror and sabotage troops of the British and their accomplices, who do not act like soldiers but rather like bandits, will be treated as such . . . and will be ruthlessly eliminated in battle, wherever they appear." Using the National Archive in Kew and the Sark Society archives, Eric Lee tells the Basalt story for the first time. Did the commandos kill bound and unarmed German soldiers?"--Amazon.com.

Ancient lavas in Shenandoah National Park near Luray, Virginia / by Reed, John Calvin,Jr.,1930-(CARDINAL)153889;
Bibliography: pages 42-43."A description of the volcanic rocks of the upper Precambrian(?) Catoctin Formation and a discussion of their environment and mode of eruption."In the Blue Ridge Province of northern Virginia, Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania, Lower Cambrian beds are underlain by a thick sequence of greenstone and interbedded sedimentary rocks known as the Catoctin Formation. An area near Luray, Va., was studied to determine the thickness of the formation, its relationship to overlying and underlying rocks, and the original nature of the lavas from which the Catoctin greenstone was derived. There the Catoctin Formation lies unconformably on granitic rocks. Its basal sedimentary layer ranges from a few inches to 150 feet in thickness and contains pebbles of underlying basement rocks. The erosion surface beneath the Catoctin is irregular, and in several places, hills as much as 1,000 feet high were buried beneath the Catoctin lavas. No important time break is indicated between the deposition of the Catoctin Formation and the overlying Cambrian sediments. The original Catoctin lavas were basaltic and were probably normal plateau basalts. Columnar joints, amygdules, sedimentary dikes, flow breccias, low-dipping primary joints, and other primary structures are well preserved.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 241-243) and index."Classic Black is a fascinating exploration of the inspiration behind and the development of classically inspired sculpture and other ornamental wares in black basalt. This famous stoneware was perfected by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768 and then went on to be produced by other prominent Staffordshire potters. Wedgwood, with prescience, said of his new creation: "Black is sterling and will last for ever." The basalt body was perfectly suited for ornamental works that reflected the neoclassical taste so prevalent in England from the 1770s through the early 1800s." --From jacket

Turning to stone : discovering the subtle wisdom of rocks / by Bjornerud, Marcia,author.(CARDINAL)273915; Hagerman, Haley,illustrator.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Sandstone -- Basalt -- Tuff -- Diamictite -- Turbidite -- Dolomite -- Granite -- Eclogite -- Glass and flint -- Quartzite -- Epilogue: Beach stones."Rocks are the record of our creative planet reinventing itself for four billion years. Nothing is ever lost, just transformed. Marcia Bjornerud's life as a geologist has coincided with an extraordinary period of discovery. From an insular girlhood in rural Wisconsin, she found her way to an unlikely career studying mountains in remote parts of the world. As one of few women in her field, she witnessed the shift in our understanding of the Earth, from solid object to an entity in a constant state of transformation. In the most tumultuous times of her own life, a deep understanding of our rocky planet imbued her life with meaning. The lives of rocks are long and complex, spanning billions of years and yet shaping our own human lives in powerful, invisibleways. Sandstone that filters out pathogens creating underground oases in aquifers of clean water. Ecologite is "the chosen rock" whose formation keeps the planet running. Earth is not just a passive backdrop, or a source of resources to be mined, extracted, and carved out. Rocks are full of wisdom, but somewhere along the way many of us have forgotten how to hear it. When we are uncertain about where to find truth, a geocentric worldview reminds us that we are Earthlings, part of a planetary community where we can find wisdom in the most unlikely places"--
