- Picturing the cosmos : Hubble Space Telescope images and the astronomical sublime / by Kessler, Elizabeth A.,author.(CARDINAL)401294;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Machine generated contents note: -- Contents -- Abbreviations -- Introduction: Astronomy's Romantic Landscapes -- 1. The Astronomical Sublime and the American West -- 2. Ambivalent Astronomers and the Embrace of Hubble Images -- 3. Translating Data into Pretty Pictures -- 4. From Unknown Frontiers to Familiar Places -- Epilogue: A Very Distant Peaceful Star -- Acknowledgments -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index."The vivid, dramatic images of distant stars and galaxies taken by the Hubble Space Telescope have come to define how we visualize the cosmos. In their immediacy and vibrancy, photographs from the Hubble show what future generations of space travelers might see should they venture beyond our solar system. But their brilliant hues and precise details are not simply products of the telescope's unprecedented orbital location and technologically advanced optical system. Rather, they result from a series of deliberate decisions made by the astronomers who convert raw data from the Hubble into spectacular pictures by assigning colors, adjusting contrast, and actively composing the images, balancing the desire for an aesthetically pleasing representation with the need for a scientifically valid one.In Picturing the Cosmos, Elizabeth A. Kessler examines the Hubble's deep space images, highlighting the remarkable resemblance they bear to nineteenth-century paintings and photographs of the American West and their invocation of the visual language of the sublime. Drawing on art history and the history of science, as well as interviews with astronomers who work on the Hubble Heritage Project, Kessler traces the ways that the sublime, with its inherent tension between reason and imagination, not only forms the appearance of the images, but also operates on other levels. The sublime informs the dual expression--numeric and pictorial--of digital data and underpins the relevance of the frontier for a new era of exploration performed by our instruments rather than our bodies. Through their engagement with the sublime the Hubble images are a complex act of translation that encourages an experience of the universe as simultaneously beyond humanity's grasp and within the reach of our knowledge.Strikingly illustrated with full-color images, this book reveals the scientific, aesthetic, and cultural significance of the Hubble pictures, offering a nuanced understanding of how they shape our ideas--and dreams--about the cosmos and our places within it. - McGraw-Hill's national electrical code 2020 handbook / by Hartwell, Frederic P.,author.(CARDINAL)652241;
"Updated to fully align with the 2020 NEC, this trusted on-the-job reference contains plain-language explanations, advice, and analysis for every provision. You will get discussions of the rationale behind specific rules that enhances your understanding of both meaning and application. This handbook features thousands of detailed diagrams and photos as well as in-depth discussions regarding controversial wording and actual errors, together with possible approaches to discussions with inspectors regarding how to cope with these issues. This book is not published by NFPA, and is therefore free to confront such topics head on."--Back cover."Written by a senior member of the NEC Code Committee, McGraw Hill's National Electrical Code (NEC) 2020 Handbook, 30th Edition is logically arranged and serves as a companion to the Code itself--the explanation for any topic lines up exactly with the applicable section in the Code. The book does not reproduce the Code, and therefore every column inch is devoted to explaining its provisions. You will get straightforward clarification of obtuse rules and vague language, enabling you to work efficiently and safely--and to achieve full compliance."--Back cover."Covers all significant changes to the 2020 NEC, including: reconditioned equipment, massived expansion of GFCI requirements, new receptacle coverage rules for kitchen islands and peninsulas, total revision of non-dwelling lighting load calculations, elimination of common enclosrues for service disconnects, exterior emergency disconnects, rules for stair towers, new EGC fill calculations for boxes, temperature limits for LFMC and LFNC, latest develpments for PV systems."--Back cover.Preface -- Introduction to the National Electrical Code® -- Brief History of the National Electrical Code® -- About the 2020 National Electrical Code® -- 90. It represented the first major dissemination of marine research results since the establishment of the Smithsonian Marine Science Network (MSN). The 39 papers in this volume represent a wide range of marine research studies that demonstrate the breadth and diversity of science initiatives supported by the MSN. The first section contains an overview of the MSN along with papers describing the multidisciplinary investigations spanning more than 37 years for the four Smithsonian marine facilities that constitute the Network: the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center at the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland; the National Museum of Natural History's Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Florida; the Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program, with its Carrie Bow Marine Field Station in Belize; and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. Subsequent papers represent findings by Smithsonian scholars and their collaborators on overarching topics of marine biodiversity, evolution, and speciation; biogeography, invasive species, and marine conservation; and forces of ecological change in marine systems.
