- The Cold War 1946 to 1991 : operations manual / by Ware, Pat,1946-author.(CARDINAL)426031;
- POSTWAR 20TH CENTURY HISTORY, FROM C 1945 TO C 2000. The Cold War emerged after the Second World War as a nuclear stand-off between the superpowers of the USA and its NATO allies, and the Soviet Union and its east European Warsaw Pact allies. The accepted dates for the Cold War are 1947 to 1991, the year in which the Communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe collapsed and the world witnessed the formal dissolution of the USSR, leaving the USA as the world's only superpower. In those intervening years the world had come dangerously close to nuclear Armageddon on several occasions.

- Forgotten warriors : the long history of women in combat / by Percy, Sarah,1977-author.(CARDINAL)881400;
- "From Boudicca to Ukraine, battlefields have always contained a surprising number of women. We may not know it, but the narrative of the battlefield as an exclusively male space has required active maintenance to preserve. Military history expert Sarah Percy sets the record straight, revealing the forgotten warriors who served on the battlefield: some fighting disguised as men, others mobilized in times of national survival, and many others serving essential non-combat functions on the front lines. As Percy reveals, the exclusion of women from positions of active combat only began a few hundred years ago: it's a brief blip in a much longer narrative of female inclusion. From ancient history through the medieval period, there were women who commanded troops themselves, who dressed as men to fight in wars around the world, and who provided significant logistical support on the battlefield. It was only in the late nineteenth century-as warfare became increasingly professionalized and nation-states began to formalize rules around combat-that women were placed firmly on the home front. The outbreak of World War I changed this policy again, as states found their resources pushed to the limit by the emergence of global, industrial warfare that required total social mobilization. By the end of the 20th century, women were once again on the battlefield around the world. Against a backdrop of sieges and desperate battles, rebellions and civil wars, a series of extraordinary women come alive on the page, determined not to be passive victims. Deeply researched and brilliantly told, Forgotten Warriors turns the notion of war as a men's game on its head, and restores women to their rightful place on the frontlines of history"--

- Engineering Hitler's downfall : the brains that enabled victory / by Roberts, Gwilym,1925-author.(CARDINAL)807200;
- Includes bibliographical references (pages 220-226).God, Churchill, and the Engineers -- A battle of wits -- Land battles lead to Dunkirk evacuation -- Radar, battles in the air, and the blitz -- Women at war atlantic agonies -- The worst journey in the world -- The end of the beginning -- The beginning of the end -- Southeast Asia and the Bellicose Pacific -- The 3 Rs of the Post-war World.Whilst living in Liverpool, Britain's second most heavily bombed city during World War II, the author experienced at first-hand the terrible effects of the war on the civilian population and when studying at Cambridge he witnessed the American heavy bombers and their fighter escorts flying to attack targets in Germany and occupied Europe. Serving as an engineering officer in the Royal Navy in HMS Sheffield provided first-hand realisation of the importance of engineering and emphasised that victories achieved in the Battle of Britain and other campaigns were made possible by newly-developed machines, equipment or techniques. These innovations gave the Allied forces a significant advantage and helped ensure eventual victory. Engineering Hitler's Downfall features numerous inventions such as the decoding machines developed at Bletchley Park; the hand-held mine detectors that cleared pathways through enemy minefields, firstly at the Battle of el Alamein but also in most subsequent actions; the newly-located factories and tanks that enabled the Russians to repulse the German invasion; the escort carriers and long range aircraft that enabled U-boats to be attacked in the mid-Atlantic; the 4000 plus Bailey bridges that allowed narrow ravines and rivers as wide as the Rhine to be crossed; the Mulberry harbours through which the D-Day bridgehead was reinforced and supplied and the pipelines under the ocean that supplied fuel for invading troops. These and many other examples illustrate what was achieved under such immense pressure. The book includes timelines to set it all in context with respect to the course of the war.
