Visual futures : exploring the past, present, and divergent possibilities of visual practice / by Bowen, Tracey,editor,contributor.; Caraway, Brett R.,editor,contributor.; Kinnear, Penny,contributor.; Peden, Elizabeth,contributor.; Navare, Charudatta,contributor.; Dudzik, Matthew,contributor.; Whitney, Marilyn Corson,contributor.; Caraway, Kylie,contributor.; Lanphar, Edie,contributor.; Fitzsimmons, Phil,contributor.; Thompson, Dana Statton,contributor.; Taschereau Mamers, Danielle,contributor.; Intellect (Firm),publisher.;
Includes bibliographical references."The overall subject of the book is visual culture. What sets it apart and gives it such an original emphasis is its multi-disciplinarity and the range of critical voices, ranging through film studies, architecture, creative practice, biology, pedagogy and media theory, which are brought to bear upon the question of visuality and its relationship to futurity. In our everyday lives, we navigate across a vast sea of visual imagery. Yet, we rarely pause to question how or why we derive meaning from this sea. Nor do we typically contemplate the impact that it has on our motivations, our assumptions about science and about other people, and our actions as individuals and collectives. This book is a collection of interdisciplinary perspectives, from science to film, from graffiti and virtual environments to architecture and education that examines the ways in which we interact and engage with the visual elements of our environments. Black meme : a history of the images that make us / by Russell, Legacy,Author(DLC)no2020125987;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 161-182).A history of Black imagery that recasts our understanding of visual culture and technology   In Black Meme, Legacy Russell, award-winning author of the groundbreaking Glitch Feminism, explores the "meme" as mapped to Black visual culture from 1900 to the present, mining both archival and contemporary media.   Russell argues that without the contributions of Black people, digital culture would not exist in its current form. These meditations include the circulation of lynching postcards; why a mother allowed Jet magazine to publish a picture of her dead son, Emmett Till; and how the televised broadcast of protesters in Selma changed the debate on civil rights. Questions of the media representation of Blackness come to the fore as Russell considers how a citizen-recorded footage of the LAPD beating Rodney King became the first viral video. And the Anita Hill hearings shed light on the media's creation of the Black icon. The ownership of Black imagery and death is considered in the story of Tamara Lanier's fight to reclaim the daguerreotypes of her enslaved ancestors from Harvard. Meanwhile the live broadcast on Facebook of the murder of Philando Castile by the police after he was stopped for a broken taillight forces us to bear witness to the persistent legacy of the Black meme.  Through imagery, memory and technology Black Meme shows us how images of Blackness have always been central to our understanding of the modern world.

W.E.B. Du Bois's data portraits : visualizing Black America : the color line at the turn of the twentieth century / by Du Bois, W. E. B.(William Edward Burghardt),1868-1963,author.(CARDINAL)152231; Battle-Baptiste, Whitney,editor,writer of introduction.; Morris, Aldon D.,contributor.(CARDINAL)175718; Rusert, Britt,contributor.(CARDINAL)853372; Wilson, Mabel(Mabel O.),contributor.(CARDINAL)853371; Munro, Silas,1981-writer of supplementary textual content.(CARDINAL)856554;
Includes bibliographical references.At the 1900 Paris Exposition, the famed sociologist and civil rights activist W.E.B. Du Bois presented a series of groundbreaking data visualizations advocating for African American progress. These graphs, charts, and maps provided powerful glimpses into the lives of black Americans to convey both a literal and figurative representation of what Du Bois famously referred to as "the color line." From advances in education to the lingering effects of slavery, these infographics - beautiful in design and impactful in content - made visible a wide spectrum of black experience. W.E.B. Du Bois's Data Portraits collects the complete set of infographics for the first time in full color, making their insights and innovations available to a contemporary audience while exploring their context in social and design history. As Du Bois's prophetic work continues to grow in potency and relevance, these images illustrate, in the words of the introduction, how "data might be reimagined as a form of accountability and even protest in the age of Black Lives Matter."--Back cover

Blue mythologies : reflections on a colour / by Mavor, Carol,1957-author.(CARDINAL)266545;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 181-199) and index.The sea, the sky, the veins of your hands, the earth when photographed from space... blue sometimes seems to overwhelm all the other shades of our world in its all-encompassing presence. The blues of Blue Mythologies include those present in the world's religions, eggs, science, slavery, gender, sex, art, the literary past, and contemporary film. Carol Mavor's engaging and elegiac readings in this beautifully illustrated book takes the reader from the blue of a newborn baby's eyes to Giotto's frescoes at Padua, and from the films of Derek Jarman and Krzysztof Kiéslowski to the islands of Venice and Aran. In each example Mavor unpicks meaning both above and below the surface of culture. In an echo of Roland Barthes' essays in Mythologies, blue is unleashed as our most familiar and most paradoxical color. At once historical, sociological, literary, and visual, Blue Mythologies gives us a fresh and contemplative look into the traditions, tales, and connotations of those somethings blue.

The rise of the joyful economy : artistic invention and economic growth from Brunelleschi to Murakami / by Hutter, Michael,author.(CARDINAL)783619;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 198-213) and index."This book argues for the increasing importance of the arts as a major resource in fueling growth through the experiential dimension of today's economy. As we move from the knowledge economy to a new stage called the joyful economy, consumers shift their spending from physical objects and technical know-how to experiences of joy and disappointment. This book investigates how artistic ideas are translated into successful commercial production, and how economic growth impacts artistic invention. It examines cases of successful innovation in the creative industries ranging from the Italian Renaissance to the present. The book suggests a framework where social players move in diverse worlds of value, which leads to a stream of controversies and manias that result in the establishment of new joy products. Studies include the effect of linear perspective, as pioneered by Filippo Brunelleschi, the discovery of taste as an argument for consumption, the serial production of Pop Art and the self-commercialization of contemporary works by artists like Takashi Murakami. This theoretical and empirical study brings together the fields of cultural economics, economic sociology, management studies and cultural history. In doing so, it offers a fascinating study of how creativity has shaped and fueled commerce"--The publisher.
