"Leave This Song Behind" features the best poetry submitted by those writers to Teen Ink over the last five years. The pieces in this book were chosen because they were so powerful that they stood out from the rest. Teen Ink editors took a deep look into each poem's strengths then divided Leave This Song Behind into seven sections based on the poetic techniques or qualities that moved them most. Vivid sensory details made some poems shine; others caught their attention with simple, sparse language. Still others were chosen because of their thoughtful use of form; compelling stories; strong figurative language; unexpected connections and wit; and fresh writing about familiar topics.-Amazon

- Paint me like I am : teen poems / by WritersCorps.(CARDINAL)668799;
Artists -- Friendship -- I too am America -- Why I write poetry -- As we sit here -- Furious -- Tree that's in front of my house.Today my name is colorful. Yesterday my name was dead souls. Tomorrow my name will be lively spirits. My friends think my name is fire. The police think my name is burden. My parents think my name is symphony. Secretly I know my name is anything I want it to be. Paint Me Like I Am is a collection of poems by teens who have taken part in writing programs run by a national nonprofit organization called WritersCorps. To read the words of these young people is to hear the diverse voices of teenagers everywhere. Included are a foreward by acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni, an essay from Kevin Powell, another poet associated with WritersCorps, and writing tips from WritersCorps instructors. WritersCorps was started in 1994 to help at-risk youth in three American urban centers: San Francisco, Washington, DC, and New York City (the Bronx). Thousands of children and teenagers have since benefited from finding creative expression through writing.

- Red : the next generation of American writers--teenage girls-on what fires up their lives today / by Goldwasser, Amy.(CARDINAL)486908;
A vivid portrait of what it means to be a teenage girl in America today. Teenage girls today live their life in words--in text and instant messages, on blogs and social network pages. It's how they conduct their friendships and present themselves to the world, but they are also creating a formidable body of personal written work. This generation's unprecedented comfort level with the written word has led to a fearless new American literature. These collected essays offer a key to understanding one of the most mislabeled and underestimated members of society. Here, nearly sixty teenage girls from across the country, representing a diverse spectrum of socioeconomic, political, racial, and religious backgrounds, create a rich portrait of life as a teen girl in America today, revealing the complicated inner lives, humor, hopes, struggles, thrills, and obsessions of this generation.--From publisher description.
