Propagation and use of Spartina alterniflora for shoreline erosion abatement / by Woodhouse, W. W.,Jr.(William Walton),1910-1990,author.(CARDINAL)166173; Seneca, E. D.(CARDINAL)166302; Broome, S. W.(Stephen White),1945-(CARDINAL)166218; Coastal Engineering Research Center (U.S.)(CARDINAL)161589;
Includes bibliographical references (page 72).Experimental plantings to stabilize eroding shorelines in Bogue Sound in 1974 were successful. Better stands were produced on sites subject to severe wave stress by reducing transplant spacing to 1.5 to 2 feet apart. Rhizomes without well-developed culms attached were worthless as propagules within the intertidal zone. Seeding was unsuccessful due to exposure to excessive wave energy.

The world of the salt marsh : appreciating and protecting the tidal marshes of the southeastern Atlantic coast / by Seabrook, Charles.(CARDINAL)529106;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 333-356) and index.The poetry of the marsh -- A walk across the marsh -- Tide watching -- Too big for its britches -- Farms in the river -- Gone with the flow -- A tale of two rivers -- An endangered culture -- The Institute -- Protecting the marsh? -- Saving the oyster -- Saving the marsh -- Rice fields and causeways -- Bridging the marsh -- The ultimate price -- Living on the edge -- The last season -- The beloved land -- Epilogue."Focusing on areas from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to Cape Canaveral, Florida, Charles Seabrook examines the ecological importance of the salt marsh, calling it "a biological factory without equal." Twice-daily tides carry in a supply of nutrients that nourish vast meadows of spartina (Spartina alterniflora)-a crucial habitat for creatures ranging from tiny marine invertebrates to wading birds. The meadows provide vital nurseries for 80 percent of the seafood species, including oysters, crabs, shrimp, and a variety of finfish, and they are invaluable for storm protection, erosion prevention, and pollution filtration." - Provided by publisher.
