- The space business : from hotels in orbit to mining the moon -- how private enterprise is transforming space / by May, Andrew(Andrew James),author.;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Space for everyone? -- Suborbital adventures -- Into orbit -- Vacations in space -- Extraterrestrial industries -- The billionaire space race."Even before Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, private companies were exploiting space via communication satellites - a sector that is seeing exponential growth in the internet age. In human spaceflight, too, commercialisation is making itself felt. Billionaire entrepreneurs Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson have long trumpeted plans to make space travel a possibility for ordinary people and those ideas are inching ever closer to reality. At the same time, other companies plan to mine the Moon for helium-3, or asteroids for precious metals. Science writer Andrew May takes an entertaining, in-depth look at the triumphs and heroic failures of our quixotic quest to commercialise the final frontier"--Publisher's description.

- The value of the Moon : how to explore, live, and prosper in space using the Moon's resources / by Spudis, Paul D.,author.(CARDINAL)756630;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 211-220) and index.Luna -- Earth's companion in space -- The Moon conquered -- and abandoned -- After Apollo -- a return to the Moon? -- Another run at the Moon -- Implementing the vision -- Why? Three reasons the Moon is important -- How? Things we should have been doing -- If not now, when? If not us, who? -- A visit to the future Moon -- Afterword -- Where do we go from here?"While the Moon was once thought to hold the key to space exploration, in recent decades, the U.S. has largely turned its sights toward Mars and other celestial bodies instead. In The Value of the Moon, lunar scientist Paul Spudis argues that the U.S. can and should return to the moon in order to remain a world leader in space utilization and development and a participant in and beneficiary of a new lunar economy. Spudis explores three reasons for returning to the Moon: it is close, it is interesting, and it is useful. The proximity of the Moon not only allows for frequent launches, but also control of any machinery we place there. It is interesting because recorded deep on its surface and in its craters is the preserved history of the moon, the sun, and indeed the entire galaxy. And finally, the moon is useful because it is rich with materials and energy. The moon, Spudis argues, is a logical base for further space exploration and even a possible future home for us all. Throughout his work, Spudis incorporates details about man's fascination with the moon and its place in our shared history. He also explores its religious, cultural, and scientific resonance and assesses its role in the future of spaceflight and our national security and prosperity"--

- Back to the moon : the next giant leap for humankind / by Silk, Joseph,1942-author.(CARDINAL)144941;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 275-287) and index."In December 2022, it will have been fifty years since humankind's last voyage to the Moon. And nations around the world have been gaining momentum, increasingly rapidly, in their planning to return. NASA proposes to land the first woman and next man on the Moon by 2024 (with the Artemis program) and to build a lunar orbiting space station - the Lunar Gateway - that will be capable of sustaining a permanent human presence by 2028. The Lunar Gateway is also meant to be a base for coordinating lunar development and function as a launch site for further solar system exploration (including to Mars and beyond). Meanwhile, the European Space Agency (ESA) has called for the installation of a permanent, human-inhabited village at the lunar southern pole. And, among other lunar projects, China's National Space Administration is also pursuing a human outpost on the Moon. Private entrepreneurs are enthusiastic about mining minerals on the Moon, making rocket fuel for further space exploration, and even developing luxury hotel resorts. These various lunar initiatives that characterize the new space race to the Moon are generally more commercial than scientific. Yet, geared as they are to establish habitable facilities on our nearest neighbor in space, they will also open up the Moon to science and usher in a new age of scientific exploration. While international space agencies and commercial interests jostle and race to create habitable space and profits on the Moon, this book advocates for the science that can be done there and lays out a vision for what the next fifty years of lunar science might look like. In particular, Silk advocates for the pursuit of lunar astronomy and argues that building a telescope on the lunar far side should be an integral part of plans to return to the Moon, as it would be uniquely poised to answer some of the most profound questions facing humankind: where did we come from and are we alone?"--
