Linux for Makers : understanding the operating system that runs Raspberry Pi and other maker SBCs / by Newcomb, Aaron,author.;
[Webliography].Linux is a powerful open-source operating system that has been around for many years and is widely used for running servers and websites. But most students and Makers encounter it for the first time when they are working on projects with their Raspberry Pi or similar single-board computers (SBCs) such as BeagleBone Black or Intel Galileo. Linux for Makers is the first book that explains the Linux operating system specifically for Makers, as opposed to programmers and administrators. By gaining a deeper understanding of Linux, Makers can add another useful tool to their kit that will help them build their projects more easily. Written with the Maker in mind, this book will focus mostly on Rasbian running on the Raspberry Pi as it is the most prolific in the ecosystem today. However most of the topics covered will apply broadly to other Linux distributions and will be called out when they may differ. Many times users cut and paste from a website tutorial into the Linux command line without understanding what they are actually doing only to be frustrated when they want to modify or tweak something to suit their needs. Also, many Makers shy away from using the Raspberry Pi or similar board because they feel Linux is too foreign and they think using a command line will be more difficult than using a GUI. This book aims to overcome those fears and provide a foundation for further learning and exploration. To that end, this book will focus on the basic principles that a Maker would need to know as opposed to other resources that go into detail that is not particularly relevant to building projects.

The thinking machine : Jensen Huang, Nvidia, and the world's most coveted microchip / by Witt, Stephen,author.(CARDINAL)410465;
Introduction -- Part I -- The bridge -- Large-scale integration -- New venture -- Thirty days -- Going parallel -- Jellyfish -- Deathmatch -- The compulsion loop -- CUDA -- Resonance -- AlexNet -- Part II -- O.I.A.L.O- Superintelligence -- The good year -- The transformer -- Hyperscale -- Money -- Spaceships -- Power -- The most important stock on earth -- Jensen -- The fear -- The thinking machine -- Acknowledgments -- About the author."The riveting investigative account of Nvidia, the tech company that has exploded in value for its artificial intelligence computing hardware, and Jensen Huang, Nvidia's charismatic, uncompromising CEO. In June of 2024, spurred by the frenzy of investment following the launch of ChatGPT, and thirty-one years after its founding in a Denny's restaurant, Nvidia became the most-valuable corporation on Earth. In The Thinking Machine, acclaimed journalist Stephen Witt recounts the unlikely story of how a manufacturer of video game components shocked Silicon Valley by conquering the market for AI hardware, and in the process re-invented the computer. Essential to Nvidia's meteoric success is its visionary CEO Jensen Huang, who more than a decade ago, on the basis of a few promising scientific results, bet his entire company on AI. Through unprecedented access to Huang, his friends, his investors, and his employees, Witt documents for the first time the company's epic rise and its iconoclastic CEO, who emerges as a compelling, single-minded, and ferocious leader, and now one of Silicon Valley's most influential figures. The Thinking Machine is the story of how Nvidia evolved from providing components for circuit boards to supplying hundred-million dollar supercomputers. It is the story of a determined entrepreneur who defied Wall Street to push his radical vision for computing, in the process becoming one of the wealthiest men alive. It is the story of a revolution in computer architecture, and the small group of renegade engineers who made it happen. And it's the story of our awesome and terrifying AI future, which Huang has billed as the "next industrial revolution," as a new kind of microchip unlocks hyper-realistic avatars, autonomous robots, self-driving cars, and new movies, art, and books, generated on command"--

The worst thing : a novel / by Gaskin, Nora,1951-author.(CARDINAL)610120;
"Albert Darwin operates outside of society's norms, but so does his nemesis, Kellah Mace. If the FBI can't catch him, can she?" -- Amazon.com (viewed August 8, 2018)"When Kellah Mace's parents are killed in an accident--when Kellah is fifteen years old--she overhears someone say, "She'll go through life knowing the worst thing has already happened." Numb from loss and grief, Kellah takes these words to mean she need fear nothing. Only one thing can hurt her again: the loss of someone else she loves. The Worst Thing begins with the intense friendship of Kellah and Angel, forged on the window ledge outside of their rooms at boarding school--and in the mirror during a hair-cut makeover. After high school, these intrepid young women move to an apartment in the city. Angel jumps into a modeling career and her allure is not lost on the world--she's suddenly, it seems, everywhere. While Angel is at late night parties and photo shoots, Kellah finds the college library her refuge, until Albert shows up. Albert Darwin, called Ape by acquaintances, has a story of his own. He was a frightened little boy, grown up to be a desperate man. As he becomes a computer repairman, he muses, how stupid people think the worst thing might happen when they hit their computer reset button. Living off the grid, often invisible, often lurking on the Internet, Albert's single-mindedness brings new meaning to "the worst thing." With fascinating contemporary realism, Gaskin's novel The Worst Thing turns commonplace objects from young lives--selfies, cellphones, Google maps, glossy magazines, vintage fashion, haircuts, and ponytails--into elements of suspense." -- Fearrington Village website: https://www.fearrington.com/event/nora-gaskin-worst-thing/ (viewed August 8, 2018)
