Includes bibliographical references and index."Bisa Butler (b. 1975) is an American artist who creates arresting and psychologically nuanced portraits composed entirely of vibrantly colored and patterned fabrics that she cuts, layers, and stitches together. Often depicting scenes from African American life and history, Butler invites viewers to invest in the lives of the people she represents while simultaneously expanding art-historical narratives about American quiltmaking. Situating her interdisciplinary work within the broader history of textiles, photography, and contemporary art, contributions by a group of scholars--and entries by the artist herself--illuminate Butler's approach to color, use of African-print fabrics, and wide-ranging sources of inspiration. The first monograph on one of America's most innovative contemporary artists, this volume will serve as a primary resource that both introduces Butler's work and establishes a scholarly foundation for future research." --"Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same title held at the Art Institute of Chicago, 2020-21. The exhibition was co-organized with the Katonah Museum of Art, where it was on view from March 15 to October 4, 2020"--Title page verso.

Miniature needle painting embroidery : vintage portraits, florals & birds / by Burr, Trish,author.(CARDINAL)667609;
Trish has always been fascinated by miniature art and for years has had a yearn to try and embroider smaller pieces, there is something so endearing about little paintings with all the detail and form of a larger piece, not to mention the fact that they are much quicker to stitch! When Trish sat down to consider ideas for this book, she wanted not only something that provided a good choice, with lots of projects, but also to ensure that each project was worthy of stitching. The designs needed to be fresh and appealing, to depict the pretty, romantic illustrations typical of the Victorian and post-Victorian eras. Teaching embroidery has helped Trish to understand the need for clarity in both the technique and project instructions, so instructions on everything about long and short stitch and how to adapt it to fit different situations and projects have been provided. Each project is accompanied by a detailed thread diagram which shows exactly which colour should be used and where. The small size of the designs allows for great flexibility in their final use - such as group framing, making up into cushions, book covers, quilt squares, needle cases, box lids, tote bags, pockets on clothing and so on. Following the portraits, birds and flowers, a section with much smaller Victorian pansies and buds, again with thread diagrams has been added.

Based on four years of reporting and access to the complete case files, and hundreds of first hand interviews, this book takes readers on a journey behind the scenes of the investigation, as the author the drama of the trials and appeal hearings he lived through. Four days later, the prosecutor jailed Meredith's roommate, American student Amanda Knox, and Raffaele Sollecito, her Italian boyfriend. He also jailed Rudy Guede, an Ivory Coast drifter. First born girls : a memoir / by McFadden, Bernice L.,author.(CARDINAL)657801;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 377-381)."On her second birthday in 1967, Bernice McFadden died in a car crash near Detroit, only to be resuscitated after her mother pulled her from the flaming wreckage. Firstborn Girls traces her remarkable life from that moment up to the publication of her first novel, Sugar. Growing up in 1980s Brooklyn, Bernice finds solace in books, summer trips to Barbados, and boarding school to escape her alcoholic father. Discovering the works of Alice Walker and Toni Morrison, she finally sees herself and her loved ones reflected in their stories of "messy, beautiful, joyful Black people." Interwoven with Bernice's personal journey is her family's history, beginning with her four-times enslaved great-grandmother Louisa Vicey Wilson in 1822 Hancock County, Georgia. Herdescendants survived Reconstruction and Jim Crow, joined the Great Migration, and mourned Dr. King's assassination during the Civil Rights Movement. These women's wisdom, secrets, and fierce love are passed down like Louisa's handmade quilt. A memoir of many threads, Firstborn Girls is an extraordinarily moving portrait of a life shaped by family, history, and the drive to be something more"--
