- Not by My Wings Alone : From Harlem to Howard University, a Journey of Courage, Resilience and Hope / by Henry, Carolyn P.,author.;
It is a memoir that chronicles my early life living in Harlem, NY (in the 1950's) to my acceptance into Howard University with a full academic scholarship (in 1970). The story follows my life's journey of triumphs and challenges living with my unwed mom and six brothers; playing, many times unsupervised - in the streets; witnessing the physical and verbal abuse of my mother by our Italian father; finding out unexpectedly who my biological father is; experiencing the death of others; being ripped from my family and placed into an emergency shelter, several foster homes and ultimately a residential treatment facility. I share my many years of being bullied and failing in school for the first eight years of my education. I describe the one teacher in 5th grade who recognized and sparked my love for writing; the middle school teacher who challenged me to strive for the Honor Roll, and the high school teacher who encouraged me to join the office helpers club-despite by fear of being the only minority, and to research colleges. I describe being molested twice, and the subsequent shame and confusion whether or not to tell. I chronicle my fears of being abandoned by the people who were supposed to love me; my fears and the trauma of being bullied by classmates and a sadistic foster mother for almost six years; a severe stuttering problem that often left me paralyzed and afraid to talk; and finally gaining some semblance of self-confidence by learning to play the flute and passing all my classes; to ultimately moving to a residential center where I received support, encouragement, clear expectations for behavior and am pushed to excel academically by a wonderful support system of cottage parents, social workers and administrators. My memoir is about overcoming the extremely dark and adverse situations we sometimes find ourselves in at a young age; and how we can overcome these very real obstacles by being open and receptive to receiving help from pivotal, supportive people. It demonstrates powerfully in intimate detail that your past circumstances do not have to define your future success.13-18 years
