Sir Cumference and the Fracton Faire : A Math Adventure / by Neuschwander, Cindy,author.(CARDINAL)641378; Geehan, Wayne,illustrator.(CARDINAL)776565;
Sir Cumference and Lady Di discover "Fracton numbers" while purchasing cloth and cheese at the Fracton Faire. While twofourths may seem like the same as one-half, in truth it denotes two parts of one-half, or two quarters of the whole. But the real mystery is the fact that items at the fair keep disappearing, and Sir C, Lady Di, and the Earl of Fracton must set a numeric trap for the thief, teaching an important lesson along the way about the comparative size of fractions. Puns--both literal and visual--abound in this fun adventure story with beloved characters and a solid pedagogical foundation.610LAccelerated Reader AR

Schooling the new South : pedagogy, self, and society in North Carolina, 1880-1920 / by Leloudis, James L.(CARDINAL)210480;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 293-320) and index.Combines social and political history, gender studies, and African American history into a story of educational reform. James Leloudis recreates North Carolina's classrooms as they existed at the turn of the century and explores the wide-ranging social and psychological implications of the transition from old-fashioned common schools to modern graded schools. He argues that this critical change in methods of instruction both reflected and guided the transformation of the American South. According to Leloudis, architects of the New South embraced the public school as an institution capable of remodeling their world according to the principles of free labor and market exchange. By altering habits of learning, they hoped to instill in students a vision of life that valued individual ambition and enterprise above the familiar relations of family, church, and community. Their efforts eventually created both a social and a pedagogical revolution, says Leloudis. Public schools became what they are today, the primary institution responsible for the socialization of children and therefore the principal battleground for society's conflicts over race, class, and gender.1420L

Includes bibliographical references (pages 298-300)."Features all aspects of the artist's long career: paintings, prints, furniture, household objects, works in glass, photographs, and pre-Columbian sculptures"--"Josef Albers (1888-1976) was one of the leading pioneers of 20th-century modernism; he was an extraordinary teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist, who is best known for the 'Homage to the Square' (painted 1950-76) and 'Interaction of Color', published by Yale University Press in 1963. This generously illustrated overview of Albers's work, accompanying the first major exhibition on the artist in more than thirty years, features all aspects of his long, creative career. Beginning with Albers's time at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, the publication follows the artist to America and describes major themes of his work there as well as the importance of his frequent travels to Mexico. Paintings, prints, furniture, household objects, works in glass, photographs, and pre-Columbian sculptures are beautifully reproduced and discussed by a team of experts. The juxtaposition of Renaissance sculptures and icons with paintings by Albers underlines the intellectual and spiritual dimensions of his art, and Albers's influence on 1960s Minimalist art is also explored. Including a comprehensive biography, the book convincingly demonstrates how this great artist transformed modern design by using color, surface, and space to challenge the perception of the viewer."--Publisher's description, from dust jacket.Exhibited: "Josef Albers: Interaction", Villa Hügel, Essen, June 16, 2018-October 7, 2018.

The anatomy of fake news : a critical news literacy education / by Higdon, Nolan,1983-author.;
The fourth estate: democracy and the press -- The faux estate: a brief history of fake news in America -- Satirical news and political party propaganda apparatuses -- The roots of state-sponsored propaganda -- Fake news and the internet economy -- Fighting fake news: solutions and discontent -- The fake news detection kit: the ten-point process to save our democracy."Since the 2016 U.S. presidential election, debates about fake news have appeared regularly in entertainment, politics, and news media. While many agree on the dangers associated with fake news, there is no consensus around the definition of the phenomenon, and its origins are loosely attributed to a variety of practices and technologies. Much of the discourse has focused on proposing solutions, with media literacy being one of the most frequently mentioned. However, Nolan Higdon argues that critical media literacy pedagogy will be unsuccessful without a comprehensive understanding of fake news. The Anatomy of Fake News offers the first examination of fake news for the purpose of creating effective critical news literacy. Higdon employs a critical-historical media ecosystems approach to identify the producers, themes, purposes, and influences of fake news and incorporates his findings into an invaluable fake news detection kit. This much-needed resource provides a rich history of fake news and a promising set of pedagogical strategies for mitigating its pernicious influence"--Includes bibliographical references and index.
