Finding the words : working through profound loss with hope and purpose / by Campbell, Colin(Theater and film director),author.(CARDINAL)868843;
Fear -- Community -- Ritual -- Pain -- Denial -- Holidays -- Guilt -- Rage -- Despair -- Meaning and purpose."A powerful account of one father's journey through unimaginable grief, offering readers a new vision for how to more actively and fully mourn profound loss. When Colin Campbell's two teenage children were killed by a drunk driver, he was thrown headlong into a grief so deep he felt he might lose his mind. As he began to process his grief, he realized that much of the common wisdom about coping with loss was unhelpful-that it is a private and mysterious process and that the pain is so great that there "are no words." Campbell draws on what he learned from his own journey to offer readers an alternate path for processing their pain that is active and vocal, and truly honors the loved ones they have lost. In Finding the Words, Campbell offers practical advice on how to survive in the aftermath of loss. By actively reaching out to their community, performing mourning rituals, and finding ways to express their grief, readers will learn how to live more fully while still holding their loved ones close. Campbell shines a light on a path forward through the darkness of grief."--

Burn down the ground : a memoir / by Crews, Kambri.(CARDINAL)398542;
Boars Head, 1978-1986. Kingpin ; Montgomery hillbillies ; You're the one that I want (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) ; The man of steel ; Half baked ; Showcase showdown ; Oklahoma! ; Workin' for a livin' ; Hellcat under a hot tin roof ; Repo man -- Grove Street, 1986-1987. The miracle worker -- Weyland Drive, 1987-1989. Sixteen candles ; A petty officer and a gentleman ; Excessive noise disturbance ; Come sail away -- New York City, 2002-2008. Overboard ; Witness for the prosecution ; Nothing but the truth.In this memoir, a daughter looks back on her unconventional childhood with deaf parents in rural Texas while trying to reconcile it to her present life, one in which her father is serving a twenty-year sentence in a maximum-security prison. As a child, she wished that she had been born deaf so that she, too, could fully belong to the tight-knit deaf community that embraced her parents. Her beautiful mother was a saint who would swiftly correct anyone's notion that deaf equaled dumb. Her handsome father, on the other hand, was more likely to be found hanging out with the sinners. Strong, gregarious, and hardworking, he managed to turn a wild plot of land into a family homestead complete with running water and electricity. To Kambri, he was Daniel Boone, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ben Franklin, and Elvis Presley all rolled into one. But if Kambri's dad was Superman, then the hearing world was his kryptonite. The isolation that accompanied his deafness unlocked a fierce temper, a rage that a teenage Kambri witnessed when he attacked her mother, and that culminated fourteen years later in his conviction for another violent crime. In this memoir she explores her complicated bond with her father, which begins with adoration, moves to fear, and finally arrives at understanding, as she tries to forge a new connection between them while he lives behind bars. This book is a portrait of living in two worlds, one hearing, the other deaf; one under the laid-back Texas sun, the other within the energetic pulse of New York City; one mired in violence, the other rife with possibility.

A world of signs. Signs they are ashamed to show. They are quite young when they leave deaf school to marry, and they must fight for their lives in the hearing world. The depression is hard, but being unable to hear often means tragedy for their family. Their daughter Margaret can hear, and becomes the link for Janice and Abel to the world of hearers, a world they don't understand and don't trust. Margaret struggles with her own need for independence and the obligation she feels toward her parents. The treatment of deaf people in 1930's society, and the toll that the resultant misunderstandings take on a family, is well depicted in this film.DVD, Region 1, 5.1 Dolby surround, full screen presentation.
