- Orchid & the wasp : a novel / by Hughes, Caoilinn,1985-author.(CARDINAL)355909;
Orchid & the Wasp brings to life the charged, compulsive voice of Gael Foess, daughter of a self-interested investment banker and a once-formidable orchestral conductor, and sister to a vulnerable younger brother, as she strives to build a life raft in the midst of economic and familial collapse. Moving by wits alone, Gael cuts a swathe through the leather-lined, coke-dusted social clubs of London, the New York gallery scene and birth-throes of the Occupy movement. Orchid & the Wasp is a modern-day Bildungsroman that chews through sexuality, class and contemporary politics. It examines how we can fail our loved ones by what we want for them; what makes for a good life; what we are owed and what we must earn; and how events in our lives can turn us into people we never intended to be.

"Barista, activist, and were-monkey Maya McQueen was well on her way to figuring herself out. Well, part of the way. 25% of the way. If you squint. But now the Bay Area is being shaken up. Occupy Wall Street has come home to roost; and on the supernatural side there's disappearances, shapeshifter murders, and the city's spirit trying to find its guardian. Maya doesn't have a lot of time before chaos turns up at her door, and she needs to solve all of her problems. Well, most of them. The urgent ones, anyhow. But who says the solutions have to be neat? Because Monkey is always out for mischief"--

- Vigil : Hong Kong on the brink / by Wasserstrom, Jeffrey N.,author.(CARDINAL)360803; Hawkins, Amy,contributor.;
Includes bibliographical references.Disappearances -- Two negotiations -- Victories -- Punishments -- Battles -- Epilogue Water."On the frontlines of the battle for democracy in China The rise of Hong Kong is the story of a miraculous post-War boom, when Chinese refugees flocked to a small British colony, and, in less than fifty years, transformed it into one of the great financial centers of the world. The unraveling of Hong Kong, on the other hand, shatters the grand illusion of China ever having the intention of allowing democratic norms to take root inside its borders. Hong Kong's people were subjects of the British Empire for more than a hundred years, and now seem destined to remain the subordinates of today's greatest rising power. But although we are witnessing the death of Hong Kong as we know it, this is also the story of the biggest challenge to China's authoritarianism in 30 years. A small group of activists, who are passionately committed to defending the special qualities of a home they love, are fighting against Beijing's crafty efforts to bring the city into its fold-of making it a centerpiece of its "Greater Bay Area" megalopolis. Jeffrey Wasserstrom, one of America's leading China specialists, draws on his many visits to the city, and knowledge of the history of repression and resistance, to help us understand the deep roots and the broad significance of the events we see unfolding day by day in Hong Kong. The result is a riveting tale of tragedy but also heroism-one of the great David-versus-Goliath battles of our time, pitting determined street protesters against the intransigence of Xi Jinping, the most ambitious leader of China since the days of Mao"--

Matthew Connors received a BA in English Literature from the University of Chicago and an MFA in Photography from Yale University."Light Work presents Queens-based artist Matthew Connors' 'General Assembly'. This exhibition comprises 650 portraits that span the first year of Occupy Wall Street (OWS) in New York City. An expansive project that pairs individual black and white portraits within a tightly formatted grid, 'General Assembly' borrows its title from the movement's term for its horizontal decision-making process. Connors made these black-and-white portraits in the charged atmosphere of Zuccotti Park, elsewhere in New York City at direct actions and during more contemplative moments before and after working group meetings. When Connors first arrived at Zuccotti Park in September of 2011, he had no intention of making photographs. He first gravitated to the congregation of protesters who occupied Manhattan's Financial District out of simple curiosity. But as he observed Occupy Wall Street's 'wellspring of generative social organization', he wondered how photography could contribute to the historical moment before him. Disturbed by the way that passersby were photographing protesters at a distance, he immersed himself in the activity of the movement and sought to use his camera as a tool of engagement."--Light Work description online at source URL: https://www.lightwork.org/product/contact-sheet-208-matthew-connors/Catalog of an exhibition held 2020 August 24-October 15, at Kathleen O.
