Reading the Odyssey : a guide to Homer's narrative / by Grethlein, Jonas,1978-author.; Stolfa, Sabrina,translator.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."This book serves as both a cultural and reception history of Homer's great epic, the Odyssey, and as an in-depth exploration of the literary styles that mark the narrative out as so unique and influential. It begins with a broad survey of the Odyssey's presence in intellectual history as well as in the arts today, in literature, art, and film, and goes on to familiarise the reader with the literary form of Homeric epic and all of its peculiarities, before focusing in on the book's central thread: the narrative. The Odyssey is not only a gripping story in its own right, it also features several stories within it: the recitals of the bards; the homecoming stories of the Greek heroes after the fall of Troy; Odysseus' own report of his adventures, and the falsified stories through which he conceals his identity. Narrative presents itself as a principal theme for a comprehensive reading of the poem, and at the same time speaks powerfully to issues of identity, meaning, and experience in today's society. We all use narratives to make sense of our lives, to form identities, and to forge communities, and Grethlein shows us how Homer mastered the true art of storytelling. Across eight chapters, he takes the reader on a tour of the poem exemplifying the ways in which it reflects, with great nuance, on the various forms and functions of narrative. He highlights, in particular, its capacity to help individuals understand their experiences and themselves; to overcome contingency; and to bestow meaning on events in retrospect. Grethlein demonstrates, artfully, the ways in which the Odyssey has provided us with one of the most influential narrative schemas on which we rely, and emphasises the continuing relevance of the poem to modern readers and the modern world"--Introduction -- The Telemachy: Tales of the father -- From listener to narrator: Odysseus at the Phaeacian Court -- Polyphemus: narrative, art and history -- Homecoming, recognition and narrative -- Ethics and narrative -- Narrating the ending -- Epilogue: reflexivity and experience.

Seduced by story : the use and abuse of narrative / by Brooks, Peter,1938-Author(DLC)n 79055897 ;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 155-168) and index.""'There's nothing in the world more powerful than a good story. Nothing can stop it. Nothing can defeat it.' Thus spake Tyrion in the final episode of Game of Thrones, claiming the throne for Bran the Broken. Many viewers liked neither the choice of king nor its rationale. But the claim that story brings you to world dominance seems by now so banal that it's common wisdom. Narrative seems to have become accepted as the one and only form of knowledge and speech that regulates human affairs." So begins the scholar and literary critic Peter Brooks's reckoning with today's flourishing cult of story. Forty years after Brooks published his seminal work Reading for the Plot, his own important contribution to what came to be known as the "narrative turn" in contemporary criticism and philosophy, he returns to question the unquestioning fashion in which story is now embraced as excuse or explanation and the fact that every brand or politician comes equipped with one. In a discussion that ranges from Gone Girl to legal argument, to the power storytellers exercise over their audiences, to what it means for readers and listeners to project themselves imaginatively into fictional characters, Brooks reminds us that among the powers of narrative is the power to deceive. Precisely because story does command our attention so, we must be skeptical of it and cultivate ways of thinking about our world and ourselves that run counter to our penchant for a good story"--.
