One leg in the grave revisited : the miracle of the transplantation of the black leg by the saints Cosmas and Damian / by Fracchia, Carmen,author.(CARDINAL)354415; Jong, Jan L. de,author.(CARDINAL)354414; Santing, Catrien,author.(CARDINAL)354413; Zimmerman, Kees,editor.(CARDINAL)354412;
Includes bibliographical references.The Miracle of the Transplantation of the Black Leg, a posthumous miracle performed by the saints Cosmas and Damian, is best known from the Golden Legend of Jacobus the Voragine (1265). From the early Middle Ages on, artists have been particularly inspired by De Voragine's description of this miracle. Their works can be found in churches, monasteries, and musea, mainly in Italy, Spain, and Southern France. These artful representations have fascinated Kees Zimmerman, retired trauma surgeon, inspiring him to travel through Southern Europe exploring them. In this way he has gathered an impressive collection of photographs of paintings, sculptures, and other art and religious objects. This book offers over 80 reproductions of representations of the Miracle of the Black Leg, quite a number of which have never been published before. Articles by art historians (De Jong, Fracchia), medievalists (Santing), and an Introduction by Zimmerman himself, shed light on different aspects of the legend.

Madonnas & miracles : the holy home in Renaissance Italy / by Corry, Maya,1984-editor.(CARDINAL)354845; Howard, Deborah,1946-editor.(CARDINAL)155612; Laven, Mary,1969-editor.(CARDINAL)354846; Fitzwilliam Museum,host institution.(CARDINAL)158775;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 185-191) and index.Introduction -- Family life -- The Madonna, Christ and the saints -- Practices of prayers -- Miracles and pilgrimage -- Reform and renewal.Madonnas and Miracles exposes a hidden world of religious devotion in the Italian Renaissance home. Challenging the idea of the Renaissance as an age of increasing worldliness, it shows how religion remained a powerful force that coloured every aspect of daily life. Across the length and breadth of Italy, houses were filled with decorative objects and works of art with spiritual significance, designed to aid members of the family in their devotional lives. A wide range of religious activities, from routine prayers to extraordinary experiences such as miracles and exorcisms, took place within the home, where they were adapted to key moments in the life-cycle, including birth, marriage, sickness and death. This illustrated publication explores a variety of devotional objects and images, from luxury items to everyday household goods. Bringing together jewellery and ceramics, manuscripts and printed books, sculpture and paintings, the book offers a vivid encounter with Renaissance spirituality and domesticity. The result is a new vision of a period in which the material world was charged with sacred power. Garden wild : meadows, prairie-style plantings, rockeries, ferneries, and other sustainable designs inspired by nature / by Baranowski, André,author,photographer.(CARDINAL)832128;
A waterfront view --A place to gather -- A tapestry for the senses -- A jewel in the moss -- A transcendent retreat -- Ancient geometries -- Careless rapture -- Inspired nonconformity -- A journey of discovery -- Failing toward beauty -- Art in nature -- A miracle above."The new movement in contemporary gardening is about going back to the wilderness, creatively landscaping with native plants to enrich their environments and seamlessly merge with their natural surroundings. Politely rejecting traditional manicured, hedged and pruned gardening aesthetics to invite an alternative kind of beauty: wildly bursting with indigenous plants, old-growth trees, vibrant patches of wildflowers and perennials, succulents, un-pruned bushes and ornamental grasses. New York City's Highline is a famous example and this landscaping approach is becoming increasingly popular for private homeowners. This book surveys twelve such breathtaking gardens captured by award winning photographer Andre Baranowski. The featured gardens range from small private residencies to large properties, by renowned landscapers such as Oehme van Sweden, Fernando Caruncho, Jorge Sanchez, and Piet Oudolf. The texts detail each project's approach and the hurdles presented by its landscape, providing the reader with an array of instructional ideas from an insider's mindset. Guaranteed to be a boundless source of inspiration and treasured by lovers of gardens worldwide."--Amazon.com.
