- Getting a feel for lunar craters : a tactile view / by Runyon, Cassandra,author,editor,graphic designer.; Hurd, David,1962-author,editor.(CARDINAL)822138; Minafra, Joseph,author,editor.; Matelock, John,graphic designer.(CARDINAL)818562; United States.National Aeronautics and Space Administration.(CARDINAL)137327; Lunar Science Institute.(CARDINAL)818960;
"Today, our understanding of the Moon has been enhanced by human exploration, orbiting satellites, and modern technology. New imaging from high-resolution cameras has enabled scientists to map the surface and subsurface. Soon, robotic missions will go to the Moon and return more rock samples and future explorers will once again place their footprints in the Moon's ٢soil٣ or regolith, just as the Apollo astronauts did 50 years ago. Until then, we continue to learn more about the dynamics that have shaped the Moon's landscape by ٢viewing٣ the Moon through the eyes of instruments that uncover clues that lead us ever closer to understanding the Moon and its significance. This book is designed to give you the basics about lunar craters and basin formation and a bit of history on America's Apollo spacecraft and the astronaut's spacesuit."--companion PDF.

- Unlocking the Moon's secrets : from Galileo to giant impact / by Powell, James Lawrence,1936-Author(DLC)n 94110787 ;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 123-4142) and index.The Moon is the most viewed object in the sky, the Sun being too bright to look at directly and the planets too far away. The Greeks deduced everything that could be learned about the Moon using only the naked eye, including that it has no light of its own but reflects that of the Sun. They understood the cause of eclipses and used the Earth's shadow on the Moon to conclude that our planet is a sphere and to calculate the size of both the Moon and the Earth. The invention of the telescope some two millennia later offered the opportunity for much greater understanding, but the early observers became sidetracked onto a dead end: First, they fooled themselves into believing that they saw evidence of life on the Moon, even the works of a civilization. Second, they became convinced that the craters of the Moon were volcanoes like those we have on the Earth. These wrong-headed beliefs took centuries to dispel. The origin of the Moon itself has proven an even more difficult question, but scientists have now closed in on the answer. They find that our placid and seemingly unchanging Moon was born in colossal violence as a planet the size of Mars crashed into the primordial Earth and flung off a blob that solidified to become our heavenly companion. Unlocking the Moon's Secrets follows these developments to show how science evolves, complete with misunderstandings, contentious arguments, difficult to relinquish assumptions, and shifting views as new facts come to light. Thanks to the work of generations of determined scientists, we understand our Moon, at last.

- Photographic atlas of the moon : a comprehensive guide for the amateur astronomer / by Reeves, Robert,author,photographer.;
Includes bibliographical references and indexes.Introduction -- The creation of the moon -- The face of the moon -- The language and science of the moon -- The moon's orbit -- The lunar seas -- The lunar crater -- The atlas of the moon -- Nicknamed features of the moon -- Additional resources for the moon observer."Photographic Atlas of the Moon explains how the Earth and the Moon are locked together in a co-dependent embrace, each affecting the other in ways that affect our lives on this planet. The reader will learn in an understandable jargon-free narrative the differing geologic details of the Moon, some of which can be seen with the naked eye, allowing an appreciation of the diversity of lunar landforms. Although the author is an accomplished deep sky astrophotographer, his current passion is re-popularizing the Moon within the amateur astronomy community by explaining the origin of the Moon, the evolution of its face, and introducing its geology to Moon lovers everywhere. Robert has perfected image processing techniques that allow the amateur astronomer, using modest equipment, to exceed the quality of Earth-based professional lunar photographs taken during the Apollo era. In addition to a complete photographic guide to the surface of the Moon in 32 distinct regions, sections of this book include: The Moon We See (Phases, Libration, Eclipses), the Moon's Orbit, the Moon's Surface (creation, age, composition and appearance), the Geology of the Moon and more."--
