- 47 ronin : a samurai story from Japan / by Bassett, Jennifer,author.(CARDINAL)545924; Dragon76(Japanese artist),illustrator.(CARDINAL)859913;
"When Lord Asano drew his sword on Lord Kira one spring day in 1701, it began a story that is now a national legend in Japan. Lord Kira lived, but Lord Asano died, and after his death, his samurai became ronin, samurai without a master. And so began their long plan for revenge on Lord Kira. Their loyalty to their dead master made them famous, and people in Japan remember them to this day. The story of the forty-seven ronin has been told and retold for 300 years - in plays, novels, and films. A major Hollywood film was made about the forty-seven ronin in 2013."--Cover650L

- 47 Ronin : the classic tale of samurai loyalty, bravery and retribution / by Allyn, John.(CARDINAL)741180; Turnbull, Stephen R.(CARDINAL)160192;
Japan was a country in turmoil at the beginning of the 18th century. It was a time of pageantry and corruption in the Shogun's court. Because the merchant class was rising in power, it was also the beginning of the end of privilege for the professional warriors, or samurai, who felt their loss keenly, especially since they held the business of money-making in contempt. In the midst of such bewildering change, eruptions of violence were not unknown. In 1701 in Edo, in a moment of anger and frustration, Lord Asano of Ako lashed out at a corrupt court official and set in motion a chain of events that terminated in one of the bloodiest vendettas in Japan's feudal history. These events shocked the country and brought the Shogun himself to a legal and moral impasse. When it was over, Japan had a new set of heroes--the forty-seven ronin, or ex-samurai, of Ako.--From publisher description of the 1970 publication.

- A genius for confusion : Joseph R. McCarthy and the politics of deceit / by Fried, Richard M.,1941-author.(CARDINAL)773490;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 319-397) and index."This new biography of Joseph R. McCarthy shows how the Wisconsin Senator's campaign against American Communists prized sensation above truth. McCarthy often put aside his hunt for Reds while he pursued his anti-communist critics. He fought foes not just with noisy accusations but with covert gossip. He was gullible enough that some con artists managed to lure him on wild goose chases. The man who charged others with being "dupes" was sometimes one himself. Historian Fried's book builds on over a decade's research in a multitude of sources, many of them newly opened-not just McCarthy's own papers but those of forty-seven Senate colleagues, plus records of journalists, observers, and activists. It brings to light such theatrical episodes as a CIA "op" against McCarthy as well as Joe's quixotic search for Soviet security chief Lavrenti Beria in Spain. The resulting multi-focal perspective on the political and institutional setting in which McCarthy operated with such abandon is full of drama."--
