The language of trees : a rewilding of literature and landscape / by Holten, Katie,author.(CARDINAL)867108;
Includes bibliographical references."Inspired by forests, trees, leaves, roots, and seeds, The Language of Trees: A Rewilding of Literature and Landscape invites readers to discover an unexpected and imaginative language to better read and write the natural world around us and reclaim our relationship with it. In this gorgeously illustrated and deeply thoughtful collection, Katie Holten gifts readers her tree alphabet and uses it to masterfully translate and illuminate beloved lost and new original writing in praise of the natural world. With an introduction from Ross Gay, and featuring writings from over fifty contributors, including Ursula K. Le Guin, Ada Limón, Robert Macfarlane, Zadie Smith, Radiohead, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, James Gleick, Elizabeth Kolbert, Plato, and Robin Wall Kimmerer, Holten illustrates each selection with an abiding love and reverence for the magic of trees. She guides readers on a journey from "primeval atoms" and cave paintings to the death of a 3,500 year-old cypress tree, from Tree Clocks in Mongolia and forest fragments in the Amazon to the language of fossil poetry, unearthing a new way to see the natural beauty all around us and an urgent reminder of what could happen if we allow it to slip away. The Language of Trees considers our relationship with literature and landscape, resulting in an astonishing fusion of storytelling and art and a deeply beautiful celebration of trees through the ages"--

Elizabeth Bradford : time + terrain / by Bradford, Elizabeth,artist.(CARDINAL)364293; Hanzal, Carla M.,curator,interviewer.(CARDINAL)272604; Blowing Rock Art and History Museum,host institution.(CARDINAL)266607;
Elizabeth Bradford is a native Carolinian with deep roots in the rural landscape. During much of her career she has worked to record the traditional look of farmland before it is lost. Her work has centered in images drawn from her rural community and her family's ancestral farm in north Mecklenburg County where she lives. In recent years she has painted the countries where she has traveled and expanded the scope of her work to include the wilderness, which she studies during backpacking and kayaking expeditions. Bradford's work explores intricate formal patterns found in nature. Ranging in scale from small and intimate to large and enveloping, her vibrant paintings reflect her personal perception of color. Though representational, there is a connection with the traditions of abstract art, as well as the Pattern and Decoration movement and Pop Art. Bradford's paintings investigage landscape and the power of place, with special affection for the Southeast.

"They came in the dark, and took the narrow path that only witches used. Everyone said that's what they were... But what if everyone was wrong? Watch what happens when one girl steps into the woods and gets to know these newcomers. The spooky black cat? Meet Mingus! The broomsticks and cloaks? Cloth and wooden handles. And those shadows in the sky? Handmade kites, fluttering in the breeze. When the breeze becomes a blustery storm, everything changes... including first impressions. Told from two perspectives, here is a gentle and timely reminder that all it takes to bridge the gap of misunderstanding and fear between people is an open and willing heart."--Ages 3-7.Grades K-1.AD420L
