Understanding fertility / by Kovacs, Gabor,1947 April 6-author.(CARDINAL)864886;
Includes bibliographical references and index.How conception occurs and why pregnancy does not always happen -- Is the male partner fertile? Can his sperm be improved? What options are available? -- Physiology of the menstrual cycle and anovulation treatment -- Are my uterus or my tubes stopping me getting pregnant? -- Unexplained (idiopathic) infertility -- What is IVF and what does it entail? -- Fertility preservation and other reproductive options -- Mind over matter? -- Concluding remarks."In this first chapter we will outline the steps that are necessary to achieve pregnancy. This includes the three primary requirements which have to be fulfilled for an embryo to be produced, and the process for that embryo to implant and grow within the womb (uterus). BASIC FERTILITY FACTORS In order for a pregnancy to occur, three basic fertility parameters need to be fulfilled (Figure 1.1). First, adequate number of normal sperm have to be deposited in the correct place at the right time; secondly eggs (oocytes) have to be released (ovulation) (this is described in detail in Chapter 2); and thirdly, the passages- the womb (uterus) and tubes- have to be open and normal, to allow the transport of sperm up, eggs down, and the resulting embryo (after fertilization) down the tubes and into the uterus, where the embryo can implant and thus have a pregnancy established"--
