- Legacy : a black physician reckons with racism in medicine / by Blackstock, Uché,author.(CARDINAL)884020;
Includes bibliographical references."The rousing, captivating story of a Black physician, her career in medicine, and the deep inequities that still exist in the U.S. healthcare system Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, it never occurred to Uché Blackstock and her twin sister, Oni, that they would be anything but physicians. In the 1980s, their mother headed an organization of Black women physicians, and for years the girls watched these fiercely intelligent women in white coats tend to their patients and neighbors, host community health fairs, cure ills, and save lives. What Dr. Uché Blackstock did not understand as a child-or learn about at Harvard Medical School, where she and her sister had followed in their mother's footsteps, making them the first Black mother-daughter legacies from the school-were the profound and long-standing systemic inequities that mean just 2 percent of all U.S. physicians today are Black women; the racist practices and policies that ensure Black Americans have far worse health outcomes than any other group in the country; and the flawed system that endangers the well-being of communities like theirs. As an ER physician, and later as a professor in academic medicine, Dr. Blackstock became profoundly aware of the systemic barriers that Black patients and physicians continue to face. Legacy is a journey through the critical intersection of racism and healthcare. At once a searing indictment of our healthcare system, a generational family memoir, and a call to action, Legacy is Dr. Blackstock's odyssey from child to medical student to practicing physician-to finally seizing her own power as a health equity advocate against the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement"--

These genuine stories are all curated by a professor with decades of experience in experimental education and behavioral neuroscience, who explores each experience through the lens of social science principles like implicit bias or stereotype threat. - Complaints and disorders; the sexual politics of sickness / by Ehrenreich, Barbara.(CARDINAL)127912; English, Deirdre.(CARDINAL)123629;
Bibliography: pages 90-94.In this exciting sequel to their underground bestseller, Witches, Midwives, and Nurses, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English document the tradition of American sexism in medicine before and after the turn of the century. Citing vivid examples, including numerous "treatments" and "rest cures" perpetrated on women through the decades, the authors analyze the biomedical rationale used to justify the wholesale sex discrimination throughout our culture-in education, in jobs, and in public life. Ever since Hippocrates, male medics have treated women as the "weaker" sex. By the late 19th century, when the authority of religious documents had waned, the ultimate rationale for sex discrimination became solely biomedical. In this intriguing pamphlet, the authors raise the diffuclt question: "How sick-or well-are women today?" They assert that feminists today want more than "more": "We want a new style, and we want a new substance of medical practice as it relates to women."

- EmpowHERed health : reforming a dismissive healthcare system / by Grigsby, S. Mayumi,author.;
Includes bibliographic references."When experiencing health issues, going to the doctor should make you feel better. What happens when it makes you feel worse? In EmpowHERed Health: Reforming a Dismissive Health Care System, author S. Mayumi 'Umi' Grigsby discusses the potential link between negative interactions with health professionals and health inequity with a focus on Black women in US. Spurred by her own experience with doctors who, for years, dismissed her pain, Grigsby was finally vindicated by a doctor who was a woman of color. Confirming her suspicion with a diagnosis of a shocking number of uterine fibroids, Grigsby wondered if other women were being treated similarly. Following interviews with numerous women, she was horrified to discover her mistrust was justified. Grigsby shares her story as well as theirs in the hope of helping others navigate through a health care system that seems to shrug them off. In this book you'll hear from: Reese, who's story shines a light on the inadequacies in sexual health education in public schools; Lyle who shows us that some doctors are not trained to contextualize; Sheila who did everything right for herself and still didn't receive the care she deserved. EmpowHERed speaks to not only Black women but also other marginalized individuals who are looking to feel empowHERed and less alone in their fight against the health care system. The title may be gendered but the message is inclusive. Grigsby asks the question(s): Do you feel empowHERed? If not, would you like to be?"--Back cover.
