- Blood feather / by Kelsey, Karla,author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 101-104).Poetry. An actress. A thinker. A filmmaker. Built of archives and the imagination, the three fictive women narrating BLOOD FEATHER articulate a feminist philosophy of art-making and life-making for our fractured world. Kelsey engages the given by calling on female artists of the past--Lilian Gish, Maya Deren, Maria Tallchief, and the architect Eileen Gray, among others--to join this drama of character and form. Here, structures of the past and ambitions for our future shape BLOOD FEATHER'S personae as they confirm and resist, collude with and attempt to reinvent, the cultural and personal histories that surround them.

Includes bibliographical references (page 402).Frida Kahlo was just one of them: between 1930 and the 1960s many more women artists contributed to the Surrealist movement than has hitherto been assumed. The male Surrealists surrounding André Breton mostly saw them only as partners or models, but this volume shows how much more these women artists had to offer. The dominant topic of male Surrealists was woman as goddess, she-devil, doll, fetish, child-woman, android, and dream creature. The women artists of Surrealism, on the other hand, were searching for a new female identity and incidentally discovered their own language of forms. And then there was the examination of political topics, literature and foreign myths. Painting, drawing, objects, photography and films complement each other to create an overall picture of the surreal and fanciful creative work of the women artists of the avant-garde from all over the world. Exhibition: Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Frankfurt am Main, Germany (13.02. - 24.05.2020) / Louisiana Museum of modern art, Humlebæk, Denmark (18.06. - 27.09.2020).
