- The price of safety : hidden costs and unintended consequences for women in the domestic violence service system / by Shoener, Sara Jane,1981-author.(CARDINAL)413449;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Specialized public resources for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) are increasingly common and diverse--from protection order courts and dedicated domestic violence units in police precincts to a vast network of community-based emergency shelters and counseling services. Yet little consensus exists regarding which resources actually work to reduce violence and help survivors lead the lives they would like to live. This book is an account of these resources and IPV survivors' experiences with them in three communities in the United States. Through detailed observations of services such as court procedures, public benefits processes, and community-based IPV programs as well as in-depth interviews with dozens of IPV survivors and practitioners, Shoener describes how our current institutional response to IPV is often not useful--and sometimes quite harmful--for IPV survivors with the least material, social, and cultural capital to spare. For these women, as the interviews vividly record, IPV has long-term economic and social consequences, disrupting career paths and creating social isolation."--""Through in-depth ethnographic research, this book surveys intimate partner violence survivors' experiences of services intended to increase their safety, and along the way describes how many of these services can be inaccessible, irrelevant, and sometimes harmful, for those with the fewest resources to spare"--Provided by publisher"--

- Including families of children with special needs : a how-to-do-it manual for librarians / by Banks, Carrie Scott,author.(CARDINAL)404346; Feinberg, Sandra,1946-author.(CARDINAL)208636;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 291-303) and index.What's inclusion all about? -- What does the law say? -- Developmentally appropriate library services -- Resource-based practice and inclusion -- Multiple intelligences and universal design -- Assessing your staff and library -- Staff training -- Community involvement -- Designing library services for all children -- Assistive and adaptive technology -- Playing and learning : in the library and at home -- Resource centers for children, families, and other professionals -- Electronic resources.Whether you work in a public, school, or hospital library, some of your young patrons have disabilities. Ramps, adaptive technology, and Braille books lay only the physical basis for including them into the library. Segregating them because of their disabilities is detrimental to their development, and to society as a whole. Serving them, and their families, involves educating yourself on the issues they face on a daily basis.
