These clichés of nature films ignore a key landscape feature: villagers just off-camera who endure the dangers and costs of living with wild animals. The Maasai tribe of Kenya and Namibia's Himba -- two of earth's oldest cattle cultures -- are emerging from a century of 'white man's conservation,' which threw them off their lands, banned subsistence hunting and fueled resentment. They are discovering that earnings from wildlife tourism can rival the benefits of livestock. But change is not easy. Charting the collision of ancient ways with Western expectations, [this film] offers complex, intimate stories of Africans at the forefront of community-based conservation"--Container.Funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, John D. and Catherine T. EBCI lands dialogue : final report / by Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.Dialogue and Action Plan Team.; Catalpa Circle, LLC.; Cherokee Preservation Foundation.(CARDINAL)792692; Mainspring Conservation Trust.;
Includes bibliographical references and index."A shift over several decades from an older, pastoral landscape to one dominated by commercial and residential development threatens the ability of the Cherokee community to make choices about how it grows, develops, and follows its place-based community values. Action is required both to counter negative trends and also to take advantage of regional trends that can benefit the EBCI (Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians) ... Cherokee community members and a handful of outside partners met, over a year in 2014-2015, to discuss the need for accessing lands off-Boundary beyond existing tribal holdings. Their dialogue focused on off-Boundary areas, in the regional "zone of influence," as identified in the recently-adopted Legacy Plan. As the Dialogue progressed, it became clear that it was not enough simply to look at securing any land. The importance of accessing a new base, specifically for resource-dependent businesses, heritage preservation, and green and cultural tourism, emerged."-- Pages 1-2.

Food from the radical center : healing our land and communities / by Nabhan, Gary Paul,author.(CARDINAL)164856;
Includes bibliographical references and index.America has never felt more divided. But in the midst of all the acrimony comes one of the most promising movements in our country's history. People of all races, faiths, and political persuasions are coming together to restore America's natural wealth: its ability to produce healthy foods. In Food from the Radical Center, Gary Nabhan tells the stories of diverse communities that are getting their hands dirty and bringing back North America's unique fare: bison, sturgeon, camas lilies, ancient grains, turkeys, and more. These efforts have united people from the left and right, rural and urban, faith-based and science-based, in game-changing collaborations. Their successes are extraordinary by any measure, whether economic, ecological, or social. In fact, the restoration of land and rare species has provided--dollar for dollar--one of the best returns on investment of any conservation initiative. As a leading thinker and seasoned practitioner in biocultural conservation, Nabhan offers a truly unique perspective on the movement. He draws on fifty years of work with community-based projects around the nation, from the desert Southwest to the low country of the Southeast. Yet Nabhan's most enduring legacy may be his message of hope: a vision of a new environmentalism that is just and inclusive, allowing former adversaries to commune over delicious foods.

Arrested justice : black women, violence, and America's prison nation / by Richie, Beth.(CARDINAL)753363;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 179-218) and index.The problem of male violence against black women -- How we won the mainstream but lost the movement -- Black women, male violence, and the buildup of a prison nation -- The matrix: a black feminist response to male violence and the state.Black women in marginalized communities are uniquely at risk of battering, rape, sexual harassment, stalking and incest. Through the compelling stories of Black women who have been most affected by racism, persistent poverty, class inequality, limited access to support resources or institutions, the author shows that the threat of violence to Black women has never been more serious, demonstrating how conservative legal, social, political and economic policies have impacted activism in the U.S. based movement to end violence against women. She argues that Black women face particular peril because of the ways that race and culture have not figured centrally enough in the analysis of the causes and consequences of gender violence. As a result, the extent of physical, sexual and other forms of violence in the lives of Black women, the various forms it takes, and the contexts within which it occurs are minimized, at best, and frequently ignored. this book brings issues of sexuality, class, age, and criminalization into focus right alongside of questions of public policy and gender violence, resulting in a compelling critique, a passionate reframing of stories, and a call to action for change.
