He seemed to be in the minor leagues, except for the fact that he is a member of two major foreign policy and covert-ops committees. However, once Charlie is prodded by his major conservative supporter, Joanne Herring, Wilson learns about the plight of the people who are suffering from the effects of the brutal Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. With the help of the maverick CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, Wilson dedicates his canny political efforts to supply the Afghan mujahideen with the weapons and support needed to defeat the Soviet Union. Ultimately, Charlie learns that while military victory can be obtained, there are other consequences and prices to that fight that are ignored to everyone's sorrow. - Behind the lines : WWI's little-known story of German occupation, Belgian resistance, and the band of Yanks who saved millions from starvation : beginnings, 1914 / by Miller, Jeff,1952-author.(CARDINAL)726757;
August 1914, Invasion -- September 1914, Beginnings of hunger and retaliation -- October 1914, Stumbling toward organization -- November 1914, Coming together -- December 1914, Uncertainty prevails.During World War I, the Commission for Relief in Belgium (CRB) initiated, organized, and supervised the largest food and relief drive the world has ever seen. Working in concert with its counterpart in Belgium, the Comite National, the CRB fed and clothed for four years more than 9 million Belgians and northern French trapped behind German lines. Young, idealistic Americans volunteered to go into German-occupied Belgium to guarantee the food would not be taken by the Germans. They had to maintain strict neutrality in what they said and did as they watched the Belgians suffer under the harsh German regime. Covering August 1914 through December 1914, this nonfiction book follows a handful of CRB delegates, a twenty-two-year-old Belgian woman, two U.S. diplomats, the head of the CRB, and a Belgian businessman and a Belgian priest who team up to fight the German occupation. It is a story that few have heard.--

Includes bibliographical references (pages 215-219).Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment, and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas--those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings and to attain buddhahood for their sake. This version, translated from the Tibetan, is a revision by the translators of the 1997 edition. Included are a foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a new translator's preface, a thorough introduction, a note on the translation, and three appendices of commentary by the Nyingma master Kunzang Pelden.

A Chariot to Freedom presents the preliminary practices that form the foundation of the Vajrayana Buddhist path. In order to receive the proper empowerments and instructions from a qualified master, one must first make specific preparations, which in most traditions consists of a five-stage process of purifying the mind. Supported by the writings of the greatest teachers of the past and passages from Buddhist classical literature, Shechen Gyaltsap Gyurme Pema Namgyal (1871-1926) explains in depth the five practices of taking refuge, arousing bodhichitta, Vajrasattva purification, mandala offering, and Guru Yoga. Drawing from the original words of the Buddha in the sutras and from the later treatises of masters such as Nagarjuna, Shantideva, and Guru Padmasambhava, Shechen Gyaltsap's commentary reads like a carefully selected anthology of Buddhist teachings that reveal the preliminary practices of Vajrayana Buddhism. Shechen Gyaltsap explains why each practice is beneficial and provides profound and eminently useful guidance for practitioners, while simultaneously transmitting the wisdom of generations of Buddhist masters"--.

- El hombre en busca de sentido / by Frankl, Viktor E.(Viktor Emil),1905-1997,author.(CARDINAL)147109; Freire, José Benigno,author of preface.; Container of (expression):Frankl, Viktor E.(Viktor Emil),1905-1997.Psycholog erlebt das Konzentrationslager.Spanish.; Comité de Traducción al Español (Firm),translator.;
Includes bibliographical references. In this work, a Viennese psychiatrist tells his grim experiences in a German concentration camp which led him to logotherapy, an existential method of psychiatry. This work has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 the author, a psychiatrist labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the stories of his many patients, he argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. His theory, known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos (meaning), holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.
