- Invasion ecology / by Krasny, Marianne E.(CARDINAL)265079;
SECTION 1: UNDERSTANDING INVASION ECOLOGY: Introduction -- Population ecology -- Community ecology -- Ecosystem ecology -- SECTION 2: INVASION ECOLOGY PROTOCOLS: INTRODUCING RESEARCH: Overview -- Protocol 1: Early detection surveys -- Protocol 2: Plot samplings: density and percent cover -- Protocol 3: Transect surveys -- Protocol 4: Measuring decomposition using soda lime -- Protocol 5: Measuring decomposition using a titration -- Protocol planning and review forms -- SECTION 3: BEYOND PROTOCOLS: CONDUCTING INTERACTIVE RESEARCH: Ideas for invasion ecology research -- Purple Loosestife projects -- Phragmites projects -- Interactive research forms.Invasive species are threatening the environment and the economy. These newcomers and their impact on the ecological balance are the focus of this material, a guide to learning skills for investigating the behaviors of non-native and native species. The reader will discover the links among biology, ecology, and environmental studies -- as well as the important connection between science and public policy. Studying invaders such as zebra mussels, chestnut blight, purple loosestrife, and Phragmites, the reader will explore how scientists are fighting these aggressors with biological controls. This student edition has three sections: background on the science of ecology and its place in the control of invasive species; protocols for practicing methods that scientists use in monitoring invasive species, such as early detection surveys, plot sampling, transect surveys, and decomposition studies; and a series of worksheets to serve as a guide through the student's own interactive research.

Chestnut decline -- The wonder and admiration of all -- To maintain the balance of nature -- Grandfather had lived in a log -- A national calamity -- Part four. Chestnut revival -- Genes for blight resistance -- Conclusion. The giving tree -- Acknowledgments -- Notes -- Index"Before 1910 the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. Although historical evidence suggests the natural distribution of the American chestnut extended across more than four hundred thousand square miles of territory-an area stretching from eastern Maine to southeast Louisiana-stands of the trees could also be found in parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, Washington State, and Oregon. An important natural resource, chestnut wood was preferred for woodworking, fencing, and building construction, as it was rot resistant and straight grained. The hearty and delicious nuts also fed wildlife, people, and their livestock. Ironically, the tree that most piqued the emotions of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Americans, has virtually disappeared from the eastern United States. After a blight fungus was introduced into the United States during the late nineteenth century, the American chestnut became functionally extinct. Although the virtual eradication of the species caused one of the greatest ecological catastrophes since the last ice age, considerable folklore about the American chestnut remains. Some of the tree's history dates to the very founding of our country, making the story of the American chestnut an integral part of American cultural and environmental history. The American Chestnut tells the story of the American chestnut from Native American prehistory through the Civil War and the Great Depression. Davis documents the tree's impact on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American life, including the decorative and culinary arts. While much attention is paid to the importation of chestnut blight and the tree's decline as a dominant species, the author also evaluates efforts to restore the American chestnut to its former place in the eastern deciduous forest, including modern attempts to genetically modify the species"--

- Fungipedia : a brief compendium of mushroom lore / by Millman, Lawrence,author.(CARDINAL)521540; Porter, Amy Jean,illustrator.; Ferrante, Chris,book designer,cover designer.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages [183]-184)."Fungipedia presents a delightful A-Z treasury of mushroom lore. With more than 180 entries--on topics as varied as Alice in Wonderland, chestnut blight, medicinal mushrooms, poisonings, Santa Claus, and waxy caps--this collection will transport both general readers and specialists into the remarkable universe of fungi. Combining ecological, ethnographic, historical, and contemporary knowledge, author and mycologist Lawrence Millman discusses how mushrooms are much more closely related to humans than to plants, how they engage in sex, how insects farm them, and how certain species happily dine on leftover radiation, cockroach antennae, and dung. He explores the lives of individuals like African American scientist George Washington Carver, who specialized in crop diseases caused by fungi; Beatrix Potter, creator of Peter Rabbit, who was prevented from becoming a professional mycologist because she was a woman; and Gordon Wasson, a J. P. Morgan vice-president who almost single-handedly introduced the world to magic mushrooms. Millman considers why fungi are among the most significant organisms on our planet and how they are currently being affected by destructive human behavior, including climate change. With charming drawings by artist and illustrator Amy Jean Porter, Fungipedia offers a treasure trove of scientific and cultural information. The world of mushrooms lies right at your door--be amazed!"--Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries (CBHL) Annual Literature Award - Nominee, 2020
