- The atlas of unusual borders / by Nikolic, Zoran.;
The world is not always what we think it is. This book presents unusual borders, enclaves and exclaves, divided or non-existent cities and islands. Numerous conflicts have left countries divided and often shattered. Remnants of countries can by design or accident be left behind as a legal anomaly in this complex world. Most people believe that a country's borders are clearly defined: just lines that separate countries. Everything on one side of the line belongs to one country and everything on the other side belongs to another country. This might be the case most of the time, but there are unusual exceptions to this unwritten rule. Examples include: Campione d'Italia where Italian residents have to travel 15km through Switzerland to reach the nearest available Italian territory. Tomb of Suleyman Shah which is a tiny Turkish enclave within Syria which was moved closer to Turkey when Lake Assad was created but still stayed in Syria. Pheasant Island which for half a year belongs to the Spanish city of Irun, and the remaining half, to its French twin-town, Hendaye. Canadian Stanstead and American Beebe Plain where the boundary line runs along the center of the main street, so that the houses on one side of the street are in Canada and on the other in the United States. These and many more instances are captured in this fascinating book full of strange geographical intrigue.

- Rider of the stars [large print] / by Horton, Robert J.,1881-1934,author.(CARDINAL)459218;
"A lone rider rode onto the Diamond H range and introduced himself as Dane. When asked where he was from, he replied, "From down yonder." Despite his cryptic answers, Gordon Hughes, the owner of the Diamond H, decides to hire him as a special hand. Hughes is having problems with rustlers, as well as a boundary dispute with his neighbor Oscar Williams of the Flying W. Dane's job will be to find out who is doing the rustling and find a way to keep peace on the range until Hughes can get his beef shipped. And if he can show Williams that he's being a fool and costing them both money, so much the better. Looking to gather some information about Williams and the Flying W, Dane rides to Black Butte, the nearby town. While there, he has a run-in with Matt Bunker, the foreman of the Flying W. It is clear to Dane that Bunker is a bully and a gunman. Could Bunker possibly be the force behind most of the trouble between the two ranches? Hughes trusts the mysterious Dane, but is he part of the solution or just another complication to deal with?"--

- Walls : travels along the barricades / by Di Cintio, Marcello,1973-(CARDINAL)800776;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 286-287).Introduction : the wall disease -- Drawing a line in the sand : the western Sahara -- The bogeyman is coming : Ceuta and Melilla -- Zero people of no man's land : the Indo-Bangladesh fence -- A nakba of olives : the West Bank wall -- Walling absurd : Nicosia/Lefkosa -- Shun thy neighbour : the U.S./Mexico border -- The mutilated city : Belfast -- The great wall of Montreal : the l'Acadie fence."What does it mean to live against a wall? In this ambitious first person narrative, Marcello Di Cintio travels to the world's most disputed edges to meet the people who live alongside the razor wire, concrete, and steel and how the structure of the walls has influenced their lives. Di Cintio shares tea with Saharan refugees on the wrong side of Morocco's desert wall. He meets with illegal Punjabi migrants who have circumvented the fencing around the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. He visits fenced-in villages in northeast India, walks Arizona's migrant trails, and travels to Palestinian villages to witness the protests against Israel's security barrier. From Native American reservations on the U.S.-Mexico border and the "Great Wall of Montreal" to Cyprus's divided capital and the Peace Lines of Belfast, Di Cintio seeks to understand what these structures say about those who build them and how they influence the cultures that they pen in. He learns that while every wall fails to accomplish what it was erected to achieve - the walls are never solutions - each wall succeeds at something else. Some walls define Us from Them with Medieval clarity. Some walls encourage fear or feed hate. Some walls steal. Others kill. And every wall inspires its own subversion, either by the infiltrators who dare to go over, under, or around them, or by the artists who transform them. "--
