Includes bibliographical references and index.v. 2, book 1, 1951-1969. A new beginning, 1951-60 -- The early Keynesian Era: a low-inflation interlude, 1961-65 -- The great inflation: Phase I.v. 2, book 1. 1951-1969Volume 2 book 1 chronicles the history the evolution and development of this institution from the Treasury-Federal Reserve Accord in 1951 to the first phase of the Great inflation into the 1960s. It reveals the inner workings of the Fed during a period of rapid and extensive change. In rich detail, drawing on the Federal Reserve's own documents. Meltzer traces the relation between its decisions and economic and monetary theory, its experience as an institution independent of policies, and its role in tempering inflation. This first installment of Volume 2 begins with the first major change in Federal Reserve policy following agreement with the Treasury to permit more independent monetary policy. Tracing the Federal Reserve's evolution during this period, this book examines the effects of the Keynesian revolution on the Fed, the reorganization of the Federal Reserve system under the chairmanship of William McChesney Martin, Jr., and the emergence of domestic inflation in the early 1960s.
