Includes bibliographical references (pages 103-104).This report summarizes the two-stage validation of the proposed binder and mix specifications and tests. Stage 1 addresses the validation of the specifications and tests with laboratory data; Stage 2, with field performance data. The report is divided into four chapters, the first of which outlines the validation process. Chapters 2 and 3 are devoted to Stage 1 and 2 validation, respectively, and include a comprehensive discussion of the laboratory testing undertaken to evaluate asphalt concrete performance in terms of permanent deformation, fatigue cracking, and low-temperature cracking. Chapter 4 addresses the validation testing conducted using modified materials.

Low-temperature properties of paving asphalt cements / by Kandhal, Prithvi S.(CARDINAL)312672; National Research Council (U.S.).Transportation Research Board.Committee on Characteristics of Bituminous Materials.(CARDINAL)325444;
Includes bibliographical references.Introduction and scope -- Penetration -- Ductility -- Viscosity -- Glass transition temperature -- Tensile strength of thin films -- Absolute-rate theory and asphalt fracture -- Viscoelastic properties -- Asphalt stiffness -- Modified asphalts.It is generally known that the behavior of asphalt paving mixtures under conditions of induced stress is affected by the response of the asphalt cement in the mix. During the service life of the pavement, asphalt is exposed to low temperatures, which tend to alter its rheological response. It is important to study the low-temperature rheology of asphalts to gain a better understanding of the complex factors that affect the low-temperature behavior of flexible pavements. A storehouse of information and research data pertaining to low-temperature properties of paving asphalts exists in the literature. However, much of the data is fragmented and scattered. This brief state-of-the-art report provides as many references as possible for each test parameter so that the reader can retrieve pertinent information in a specific area of interest.

Binder characterization and evaluation by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy / by Jennings, P. W.(CARDINAL)325422; National Research Council (U.S.)(CARDINAL)139987; Strategic Highway Research Program (U.S.)(CARDINAL)298325;
Includes bibliographical references.Executive summary -- Solution NMR characterization of asphalts -- Solid state NMR characterization of SHRP core asphalts -- References -- Appendices.Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used in solution-state and solid-state experiments on 8 asphalt cements. Using a variety of chemical and solution-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, data were obtained about the amounts of aromatic carbon in an average molecule of asphalt sample, how the carbon is arranged in terms of size of the average aromatic system and the extent of substitution. By using solid-state NMR spectroscopic techniques, the structure of asphaltic cements was probed on a small-distance scale. Difference in molecular mobility were found among the asphalts studied. Changes in molecular mobility after laboratory oxidative aging were found to be small. The implications of these data with regard to the 'micellar model' of asphalt are discussed. The research results' potential impact on understanding asphalt cement properties is explored.Performed under contract no.
