Includes bibliographical references."Artists everywhere and across all time periods have collaborated with one another. Yet in the early modern Low Countries, collaboration was particularly widespread, resulting in a number of distinctive visual forms that have become strongly associated with artistic - and especially painterly - practice in this region. While art historians long glossed over this phenomenon, which appeared to discomfitingly counter nineteenth-century notions of authorship and artistic genius that have long shaped the field, the past few decades have seen increased attention to this rich and complicated subject. The essays in this book together constitute a current state of the question, while at once pointing the way forward. In broadening the art historical lens on this subject, they draw upon economic and social history, current interests in immigration and mobility, print studies, and technical analysis, embracing a range of literary and archival sources along the way. Interdisciplinary in their perspectives and methodologically diverse, these essays present both theoretical reflections on artistic collaboration and in-depth studies of particular artist-partnerships and collaboratively made objects."--

The collaborative habit : life lessons for working together / by Tharp, Twyla.; Kornbluth, Jesse.;
MARCIVE 01/05/10What it is, why it matters, why it's the future -- Collaboration is second nature -- Partnerships challenge and change us -- Working with a remote collaborator -- Collaborating with an institution -- Collaborating with a community -- Collaborating with friends -- Flight school: before your next collaboration.In a career that has spanned four decades, choreographer Twyla Tharp has collaborated with great musicians, designers, thousands of dancers, and almost a hundred companies. She's experienced the thrill of shared achievement and has seen what happens when group efforts fizzle. Her professional life has been--and continues to be--one collaboration after another. In this practical sequel to her Creative Habit, Tharp explains why collaboration is important to her, and can be for you. She shows how to recognize good candidates for partnership and how to build one successfully, and analyzes dysfunctional collaborations. Tharp sees collaboration as a daily practice, and her book is rich in examples from her career--and she suggests that the lessons you learn by working together professionally can help you in your personal relationships.--From publisher description.

Powers of two : finding the essence of innovation in creative pairs / by Shenk, Joshua Wolf.(CARDINAL)472101;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 265-324) and index."Recently writers like Malcolm Gladwell, Steven Johnson, and Clay Shirky have sought to explain creativity as the work of lucky, hardworking people or the result of certain qualities of a particular environment or group of people. Joshua Wolf Shenk shows how such notions, as appealing as they are, miss the essence of creativity, which is generated by people working in pairs. From John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Pierre and Marie Curie to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, Shenk portrays many of history's most iconic creative duos, drawing on new scientific research and building an argument that will reshape our view of the individual, relationships, and society itself. Along the way, he reveals how pairs begin to talk, think, and even look like each other; how the most successful ones thrive on conflict; why they break up; and more. He also marshals new research that suggests how deeply the notion of pairing influences our psyches: even when we're alone, we're collaborating with the voice inside our head. At once intuitive and deeply surprising, Powers of Two is mind-blowing"--
