- Market forces [sound recording] / by Morgan, Richard K., 1965-(CARDINAL)353788; Vance, Simon. (CARDINAL)345962;
Read by Simon Vance. What do you buy and sell when the global markets reach saturation point? The markets themselves. Thirty years from now the big players in global capitalism have moved on from commodities. The big money is in conflict investment. The corporations keep a careful watch on the wars of liberation and revolution that burn constantly around the world. They guage who the winners will be and sell them arms, intelligence and power. In return for a slice of the action when the war is won. The reward? A stake in the new nation. It's cynical, brutal and it has nothing to do with democracy and the rule of law. So what else is new? The executives in this lethal game bid for contracts, fight for promotion, secure their lives on the roads. Fighting lethal duels in souped up, heavily armoured cars on the empty motorways of the future. Chris Faulkener has a lethal reputation and a new job at Shorn Associates. Has he got what it takes to make a real killing?

In the Mediterranean, Rommel's early successes in Africa were erased by the surrender of Tunisia, and German forces barely escaped Sicily before the Allies seized the island. On the Eastern Front, Soviet T-34s beat German armour in the massive tank battle at Kursk. At sea, the Allies countered the U-boat threat, and in the air, Allied forces dominated the Luftwaffe and took the war to the German home front."--Publisher's description.Description based on print version record.

- Clyde built : blockade runners, cruisers and armoured rams of the American Civil War / by Graham, Eric J.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 225-227) and index.The blockade -- The Clyde and the war at sea, 1861 -- The boom years, 1862-4 -- The Clyde's private runners -- The search for speed -- The search for cruisers and rams -- The legacy."The Civil War of 1861-65 was one of the defining moments in the history of America. The blockade of the US Southern ports during the war is well known. Less well known, however, is the role that Scotland played in this aspect of the conflict - almost 40 per cent of the ships were Scottish. This should not be surprising, however: at the time the fastest ships in the world were Clydebuilt, so it was natural that the Confederacy should turn to Scotland in their desperate bid to beat the tightening Northern blockade. The ideological conflict unfolding between American anti-slavery supporters and anti-abolitionists also spread to the other side of the Atlantic and forced the Scots to examine their own values, polarising opinions and forcing the individual to reassess their position concerning basic human rights. Using contemporary accounts and individual case studies, combined, "Clyde Built" presents a full account of Scotland's involvement in the American Civil War blockade, an involvement which almost certainly prolonged the conflict by several years"--Publisher.
