Through case studies from across all three subregions of Appalachia from Georgia to Pennsylvania, Engaging Appalachia: A Guidebook for Building Capacity and Sustainability offers diverse perspectives and guidance for promoting social change through campus-community relationships from faculty, community members, and student contributors. This volume explores strategies for creating more inclusive and sustainable partnerships through the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. In representing diverse areas, environments, and issues, three relatable themes emerge within a practice viewpoint that is scalable to communities beyond Appalachia: fostering student leadership, asset-building, and needs fulfillment within community engagement. Engaging Appalachia presents collaborative approaches to regional community engagement and offers important lessons in place-based methods for achieving sustainable and just development. Written with practicality in mind, this guidebook embraces hard-earned experiences from decades of work in Appalachia and sets forth new models for building community resilience in a changing world"--

Offending women : female lawbreakers and the criminal justice system / by Worrall, Anne.(CARDINAL)185581;
Includes bibliographical references and index.1. Theorizing Women's Experiences -- 2. Rules and Authority -- 3. Not Mad Enough, Not Bad Enough: Fifteen Female Lawbreakers -- 4. Invisible Women? -- 5. Guilty Women? -- 6. Treatable Women? -- 7. Manageable Women? -- 8. Listening to Women -- A Footnote? -- 9. Women Offenders Or Offending Women? -- Appendix: researching women -- Notes.Female offenders experience very different treatment from male offenders at the hands of the courts and welfare agencies. In Offending Women, former probation officer Anne Worrall draws on detailed empirical research to examine why this is, how the situation is perpetuated, and what the implications are for women. The author looks at the wholly inadequate categorizations applied to women who offend and the inappropriate solutions offered to their ill-defined problems. In acknowledging the State's powerlessness to categorize them, Worrall builds up a fascinating concept of the 'nondescriptiveness' of certain women offenders. By defying description they are largely neglected by (and elude the control of) professional expertise. The author then examines the relevance of the concept to a broader sociology of women's experiences. Offending Women provides an interesting and useful theoretical analysis of the discourse surrounding women's deviancy. Based on interviews with probation officers, magistrates, solicitors, psychiatrists, and female lawbreakers themselves, the book will be essential reading for practitioners in the field as well as academics in criminology and women's studies.1410L

Investing : the last liberal art / by Hagstrom, Robert G.,1956-(CARDINAL)384141;
Includes bibliographical references and index.A latticework of mental models -- Physics -- Biology -- Sociology -- Psychology -- Philosophy -- Literature -- Mathematics -- Decision making.Robert G. Hagstrom is one of the best-known authors of investment books for general audiences. In Investing: the Last Liberal Art, he explores basic and fundamental investing concepts in a range of fields outside of economics, including physics, biology, sociology, psychology, philosophy, and literature. He discusses, for instance, how the theory of evolution disrupts the notion of the efficient market and how reading strategies for literature can be gainfully applied to investing research. Building on Charlie Munger's famous "latticework of mental models" concept, he argues that it is impossible to make good investment decisions based solely on a strong knowledge of finance theory. For this second edition, Hagstrom reinforces his concepts with additional data and a new chapter on mathematics. In addition, he updates the text throughout to reflect the cause and effect of the economic and capital market volatility over the past decade. He has also added one hundred new titles to the invaluable reading list that concludes the book.

Checkmate : the king's game in the Middle East / by Buonocore, Gennaro,author.;
Checkmate is a comprehensive look into the current Middle Eastern political and strategic reality which views the region as a giant chessboard to better understand the relationship between the players. However, in viewing the complexities of the Middle East, it is important to understand that strategy is not everything. This is a region of the world where emotions, passions, and cultural heritage have played the protagonists' roles. Considering historical implications, memories both physical and emotional, and the unfortunate consequences of cultural displacements, this essay explores the effects on social identities, which may result in prolonged strife and conflict. This work does not attempt to be a sociology treatise nor a policy paper. Rather, it is a collection of personal observations and experiences placed in the context of historical events. It focuses on the Middle East, but the concept could be applied to any area of the world. With this book, the author suggests that conflict, in the greater Middle East, cannot be mitigated until Western expectations are modified to include an understanding of the effects that cultural heritage has on regional dynamics.
