This hill, this valley / by Borland, Hal,1900-1978.(CARDINAL)147613; Marks, Peter,illustrator.(CARDINAL)893351;
Hal Borland was one of America's most-esteemed and most-read nature writers. He wrote more than thirty books,j and for three and a half decades he contributed each Sunday's outdoor essay to the editorial page or the New York Times. Loren Eisley called him the "beloved spokesman for all of us who love the earth and who find sustenance in nature." This Hill, This Valley is one of the true classics of American nature writing. First published in 1957, it recounts the cycle of a year on Borland's hill-country farm in northwestern Connecticut, where he and his wife, Barbara, settled after a serious illness nearly ended his life. "We came here," he relates, "to live, two write, to see and feel and understand a hillside, a riverbank, a woodland, and a valley pasture." Borland records his year with a naturalist's eye and a poet's sense of wonder. "The continuing topic has been here in my own dooryard, six miles from the village, a hundred miles from the city." In February, purplish brown spikes of the skunk cabbage announce that spring is coming. In April, the cardinal, redstart, and goldfinch bring song and color back to the hillside. As the seasons pass, Borland finds delight and assurance in the fiddling of katydids, the tang of wild strawberries, the ripening of acorns, the lyric flight of swallows. He records the year's many miracles.
