The story of Jane : the legendary underground feminist abortion service / by Kaplan, Laura,author.(CARDINAL)391865;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Before Roe v. Wade, most women seeking abortions were forced to turn to illegal, unregulated, and expensive abortionists. But in Chicago, those who could discover the organization code-named "Jane" found a level of protection and financial help. Laura Kaplan, who joined Jane in 1971, has pieced together the histories of those who broke the law in Chicago to help care for thousands of women in what they called the Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation. Drawing on interviews with dozens of members of Jane and women who had abortions through the service, Kaplan shows how a disparate group of ordinary women -most without political experience or medical training- built a referral and counseling service into a full-fledged underground abortion service.

Abortion care as moral work : ethical considerations of maternal and fetal bodies / by Schoen, Johanna,Editor(DLC)no 97018693;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 177-178) and index.Introduction : Providing Abortion Care -- Clinics -- Conscience -- The Fetus."Fetal and Maternal Bodies brings together the voices of abortion providers, abortion counselors, clinic owners, neonatologists, bioethicists, and historians to discuss how and why providing abortion care is moral work. The collection offers voices not usually heard as clinicians talk about their work and their thoughts about life and death. In four subsections--Providers, Clinics, Conscience, and The Fetus--the contributions in this anthology explore the historical context and present-day challenges to the delivery of abortion care. Contributing authors address the motivations that lead abortion providers to offer abortion care, discuss the ways in which anti-abortion regulations have made it increasingly difficult to offer feminist-inspired services, and ponder the status of the fetus and the ethical frameworks supporting abortion care and fetal research. Together these essays provide a feminist moral foundation to reassert that abortion care is moral work"--.

All you have to do is call / by Maher, Kerri,author.(CARDINAL)417835;
"A dramatic and inspiring novel based on the true story of the Jane Collective and the brave women who fought for our right to choose, from the USA Today bestselling author of The Paris Bookseller. Chicago, early 1970s. Who does a woman call when she needs help? Jane. The best-known secret in the city, Jane is an underground women's health organization composed entirely of women helping women, empowering them to live lives free from the expectations of society by offering reproductive counseling and safe, illegal abortions. Veronica, Jane's founder, prides herself on the services she has provided to thousands of women, yet the price of others' freedom is that she leads a double life. When she's not at Jane, Veronica plays the role of a conventional housewife--which becomes even more difficult during her own high-risk pregnancy. Two more women in Veronica's neighborhood are grappling with similar disconnects. Margaret, a young professor at the University of Chicago, secretly volunteers at Jane as she falls in love with a man whose attitude toward his ex-wife increasingly disturbs her. Patty, who's long been content as a devoted wife and mother, has begun to sense that something essential is missing from her life. When her runaway younger sister Eliza shows up unexpectedly, Patty is forced to come to terms with what it really means to love and support a sister. In this historic moment when the personal was nothing if not political, when television, movies, and commercials told women they'd "come a long way, baby," Veronica, Margaret, and Patty must make choices that will change the course of their lives forever."--
