- Bending light : the moods of color / by Meola, Eric,author.(CARDINAL)546575;
Includes bibliographical references (page 198)"Bending Light: The Moods of Color showcases photographer Eric Meola's use of light and colour throughout his career of editorial, advertising, and personal work. In one hundred iconic photographs, including recent experiments with colour abstracts, and in dozens of stories and anecdotes, he examines his five-decade journey using colour in photography, its symbolism, and how it affects our moods. Meola's work is informed by writers, painters, musicians, and the desire to create visual metaphors with his imagery--whether intimate portraits, unique landscapes, or colour-saturated abstracts, his use of geometry within the frame of the photograph creates a tension that is instantly recognisable." --Publisher's description

- Mr. Lightbulb / by Wawszczyk, Wojtek,author,illustrator.; Lloyd-Jones, Antonia,translator.(CARDINAL)668386;
"Mirroring the world we live in, the protagonist of this graphic novel comes from a broken home. However, in this case, the term is quite literal. Due to freak accidents at the steelworks where his parents work, his mom is snapped, his dad is flattened. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, one day, he suffers his own life-changing experience: mistakenly swallowing a glob of molten metal gives him the strange power to radiate heat and light -- like a lightbulb. As he grows up, evolving from Bulb Boy to Mr. Lightbulb, he finds that his unique abilities can be a curse and a blessing; while they alienate him from others, they also allow him to shine. At once surrealist, comedic, heartbreaking, bitterly sarcastic, and deeply sincere, Mr. Lightbulb is an essential work of comics autobio. With bold, expressive ink strokes and brilliant use of visual metaphor, Wojtek Wawszczyk renders an affecting self-portrait, as his protagonist balances challenging family dynamics with his creative ambitions and desire to forge his way in the world. This book, which clocks in at over 600 pages, combines a grand scope with brisk plotting, adding up to a tour de force of artistry and honesty."--Amazon.

Whether the medium is paper or canvas or a computer screen, the artist's challenge is to make something without depth seem like a window into a living, breathing world. Video game art is no different. The author demonstrates how video games allow players to experience visual art in a new way and gives readers an introduction to basic drawing skills--light, value, color--as well as detailed instruction for using these methods to design complex characters and worlds. This book gives any game designer the right foundation in classical art techniques to create meaningful emotional experiences for gamers.

- The essential Gombrich : selected writings on art and culture / by Gombrich, E. H.(Ernst Hans),1909-2001,author.(CARDINAL)152243; Woodfield, Richard,editor,writer of introduction.(CARDINAL)188611; Phaidon Press,publisher.(CARDINAL)196256;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 591-614) and index.To the extent that any art historian becomes "famous," Sir Ernst Gombrich is the most famous art historian in the world. He is the author of the seminal work The Story of Art, a staunch champion of the traditional canon, and a perceptive analyst of artistry and illusion. This massive collection includes essays, excerpts from the groundbreaking Art and Illusion, autobiographical notes, and reflections on artists from Raphael to Saul Steinberg. Gombrich is not a modernist, and he has been criticized for his misunderstanding of abstract painting; but his conceptions of art encompass modern psychology and history, the study of gesture and ornament, and the social history of art. Above all, Gombrich stands against sweeping generalizations, maintaining that works of art "are not the results of some mysterious activity, but objects made by human beings for human beings."

Shifting paradigms : the late 20th-century politics of maternity."On the African continent, images of mothers and children are found wherever the visual arts are, from early rock-art sites in Egypt and the Sahara to the contemporary arts of South Africa. Discovered in a variety of materials, from stone, ivory, and metals to beadwork, wood, and even paintings, images of maternity enliven virtually every type of object made in the region. Defining maternity as a biological and cultural phenomenon, the author goes beyond obvious notions of fertility to consider the importance of maternity in thought, ritual action, and world view. - Hieronymus Bosch / by Gibson, Walter S.(CARDINAL)127336;
Bibliography: pages 175-176.No one can look at the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch without amazement and bewilderment. Professor Gibson shows that what seems inexplicable to us today--the canvases full of torture, monsters, and leering devils--was perfectly intelligible to the fifteenth-century viewer. The subjects of Bosch's paintings were in fact the overwhelming concerns of late medieval Europe: the Last Judgment, original sin, death, temptations of the flesh. The author describes each picture in detail, placing each work within the context of medieval folklore and religion, and explains that many of the acts portrayed in the pictures were visual translations of verbal puns or metaphors.

- Passage / by Roberts, Linda Foard,photographer.(CARDINAL)350573;
Linda Foard Roberts: Passage is a compilation of five series, created over the past ten years, by North Carolina based photographer Linda Foard Roberts. Roberts works in enduring genres--landscape, portrait and still life--and photographs her 21st-century surroundings using 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 cameras and vintage lenses, some over 100 years old. The result is seemingly eternal, timeless, black-and-white photography that exploits the peculiar ability of the camera to produce images that are both extremely present and yet suspended in time. Over the past decade, Roberts has been exploring the inevitable movement of time in life, focusing on memory and the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The photographs in this volume, Roberts first monograph, are meant to be read like visual lines in a poem, metaphorical and layered, with each photograph bestowing a deeper meaning upon the next.
