- In the wake : on Blackness and being / by Sharpe, Christina Elizabeth,author.; Duke University Press,publisher.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 135-162) and index.The wake -- The ship -- The hold -- The weather."In this original and trenchant work, Christina Sharpe interrogates literary, visual, cinematic, and quotidian representations of Black life that comprise what she calls the "orthography of the wake." Activating multiple registers of "wake"--the path behind a ship, keeping watch with the dead, coming to consciousness--Sharpe illustrates how Black lives are swept up and animated by the afterlives of slavery, and she delineates what survives despite such insistent violence and negation. Initiating and describing a theory and method of reading the metaphors and materiality of "the wake," "the ship," "the hold," and "the weather," Sharpe shows how the sign of the slave ship marks and haunts contemporary Black life in the diaspora and how the specter of the hold produces conditions of containment, regulation, and punishment, but also something in excess of them. In the weather, Sharpe situates anti-Blackness and white supremacy as the total climate that produces premature Black death as normative. Formulating the wake and "wake work" as sites of artistic production, resistance, consciousness, and possibility for living in diaspora, In the Wake offers a way forward." --Using the multiple meanings of "wake" to illustrate the ways Black lives are determined by slavery's afterlives, Christina Sharpe weaves personal experiences with readings of literary and artistic representations of Black life and death to examine what survives in the face of insistent violence and the possibilities for resistance.

- Biased : uncovering the hidden prejudice that shapes what we see, think, and do / by Eberhardt, Jennifer L.(Jennifer Lynn),author.(CARDINAL)810948;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 305-325) and index.You don't have to be racist to be biased. Unconscious bias can be at work without our realizing it, and even when we genuinely wish to treat all people equally, ingrained stereotypes can infect our visual perception, attention, memory, and behavior. This has an impact on education, employment, housing, and criminal justice. In "Biased," with a perspective that is at once scientific, investigative, and informed by personal experience, Jennifer Eberhardt offers us insights into the dilemma and a path forward. Eberhardt works extensively as a consultant to law enforcement and as a psychologist at the forefront of this new field. Her research takes place in courtrooms and boardrooms, in prisons, on the street, and in classrooms and coffee shops. She shows us the subtle--and sometimes dramatic--daily repercussions of implicit bias in how teachers grade students, or managers deal with customers. It has an enormous impact on the conduct of criminal justice, from the rapid decisions police officers have to make to sentencing practices in court. Eberhardt's work and her book are both influenced by her own life, and the personal stories she shares emphasize the need for change. She has helped companies that include Airbnb and Nextdoor address bias in their business practices and has led anti-bias initiatives for police departments across the country. Here, she offers practical suggestions for reform and new practices that are useful for organizations as well as individuals. Unblinking about the tragic consequences of prejudice, Eberhardt addresses how racial bias is not the fault of nor restricted to a few "bad apples" but is present at all levels of society in media, education, and business. The good news is that we are not hopelessly doomed by our innate prejudices. In "Biased," Eberhardt reminds us that racial bias is a human problem--one all people can play a role in solving.

- More than a dream : the radical march on Washington for jobs and freedom / by Williams, Yohuru,1971-author (CARDINAL)466670; Long, Michael G.,author (CARDINAL)668944;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Six decades ago, on August 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom--a moment often revered as the culmination of this Black-led protest. But at its core, the March on Washington was not a beautiful dream of future integration; it was a mass outcry for jobs and freedom NOW--not at some undetermined point in the future. It was a revolutionary march with its own controversies and problems, the themes of which still resonate to this day. Without diminishing the words of Dr. King, More Than a Dream looks at the march through a wider lens, using Black newspaper reports as a primary resource, recognizing the overlooked work of socialist organizers and Black women protesters, and repositioning this momentous day as radical in its roots, methods, demands, and results. From Yohuru Williams and Michael G. Long, the acclaimed authors of Call Him Jack, comes a classic-in-the-making that will transform our modern understanding of this legendary event in the fight for racial justice and civil rights"--Publisher's description.Ages 10-14Grades 4-6Part One: First steps -- A march for jobs -- A march for jobs - and freedom -- Kennedy resists -- Choosing the director -- Remembering Medgar Evers -- Part Two: Mapping the march -- Visualizing the day -- Kennedy caves -- Malcolm X speaks out -- The FBI attacks -- The women demand -- Part Three: On the way -- Three hitchhikers - and the students left behind -- Freedom trains -- SNCC pickets, Malcolm pokes -- Militant voices -- Part Four: Gathering and marching -- Rising at dawn -- The occupation begins -- Black women speak, hatemongers rage -- The people lead the way -- Part Five: The Lincoln Memorial program -- Freedom fighters -- Celebrities -- A socialist revolt -- A tribute to Black women -- A minister confesses, Marian Anderson returns -- Lewis scorches -- Mahalia Jackson moves the sea -- The dream -- We demand.1090L
