Corrosion prevention for extending the service life of steel bridges / by Ault, J. Peter,author.(CARDINAL)307868; Dolph, Justin D.,author.(CARDINAL)783354; United States.Federal Highway Administration,sponsor.(CARDINAL)139839; American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials,sponsor.(CARDINAL)138446; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (U.S.).Transportation Research Board,issuing body.(CARDINAL)346225; National Cooperative Highway Research Program,issuing body.(CARDINAL)281856;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 72-74)."One of the most often cited problems affecting not only the appearance, but more importantly, the structural integrity of steel bridges, is corrosion. This synthesis of current practices and existing knowledge seeks to provide a better understanding of how to combat the problem and extend the service life of aging and newly designed steel bridges. The primary approaches for gathering information were through a literature review and a survey of transportation agencies. The technical literature reviewed included "coated steels" and "uncoated steels." Coated steel bridges were further divided by liquid coatings and metallic coatings (e.g., galvanizing and metallizing). Uncoated steels were predominately weathering-grade steels designed to form a protective rust layer (patina). The synthesis also reported on the use--although somewhat limited currently--of stainless steel for structural elements and various other components of bridge structures prone to corrosion. Forty-six state departments of transportation and three other bridge-owner agencies responded to the survey, which covered both maintenance and design. The survey addressed the challenges in making the optimal choices in design and maintenance, while recognizing that approaches will vary in different parts of the country."Research sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration

Design criteria for post and beam bents with drilled shafts / by Kowalsky, Mervyn J.(CARDINAL)282914; North Carolina.Department of Transportation.(CARDINAL)145570; United States.Federal Highway Administration.(CARDINAL)139839; North Carolina State University.Department of Civil Engineering.(CARDINAL)161088;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 214-216).Final report;The geotechnical and structural design of bridge bents generally considers the substructure to be separated from the superstructure, with the superstructure idealized as a series of static loads and moments applied to the bearing locations on the bridge bent. The research work presented in this report aims at understanding and optimizing the design process of drilled shafts bents for safety and functionality. The work included the examination of the design process for drilled shaft bents and the approach used to estimate the shaft length and designate a corresponding point of fixity.Performed by Department of Civil Engineering, North Carolina State University, sponsored by North Carolina Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Adminsitration

Remote works : managing for freedom, flexibility, and focus / by Greene, Ali,author.(CARDINAL)860263; Sanderson, Tamara,author.(CARDINAL)860262; Mullenweg, Matt,author of foreword.(CARDINAL)554809;
Includes bibliographical references and index."Two veteran remote managers draw on their pre- and post-COVID experience to offer pragmatic, proven advice for designing remote work environments where everyone thrives. Since the pandemic began, a staggering 64 million American workers have experienced working full-time from home. In 2020 and 2021, quick-fix solutions and emergency-transition plans allowed organizations to survive with remote work. Now Ali Greene and Tamara Sanderson want to show managers how to design positive, flexible virtual work cultures that will thrive in the long term-because remote work is here to stay. Drawing on their years of experience working for all-remote companies DuckDuckGo and Automattic (the parent company of WordPress) and as international digital nomads, Greene and Sanderson have written the ultimate design-thinking handbook for managing remote and hybrid teams. The book addresses challenges such as managing conflict, establishing norms, communicating effectively, reframing productivity, and creating an authentic team culture. Using practical, hands-on exercises, they give managers the confidence to design and prototype optimal remote work structures for their teams. Greene and Sanderson never said the remote work world is easy, but they've seen firsthand that it can be effective and enjoyable. Now it's time for others to reap the benefits. Reading group discussion guide is available in the book"--
