Sterilized by the state : eugenics, race, and the population scare in twentieth-century North America / by Hansen, Randall.(CARDINAL)327678; King, Desmond S.(CARDINAL)327679;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 281-294) and index.Coerced sterilization : outcomes, theories, methods -- The eugenicists : short portraits -- Eugenic anxieties -- Homes for the feebleminded -- The eugenicists' first throw : sterilization policy before the Second World War -- Buck v. bell and beyond -- Sterilization thwarted -- Sterilization and murder in Nazi Germany -- Revival and recovery : eugenics in new clothes -- Eugenics and world population growth -- The sterilized : voices from Alberta and Oregon -- Postwar sterilization : institutions and abuse -- Welfare, African Americans, and coerced sterilization -- Those who sterilized -- Conclusion: A century of coerced sterilization."This book is the first comprehensive analysis of eugenics in North America focused on the second half of the twentieth century. Based on new research the authors show why eugenic sterilization policies persisted after the 1940s in the United States and Canada. Through extensive archival research, they show how both superintendents at homes for the 'feebleminded' and pro-sterilization advocates repositioned themselves after 1945 to avoid the taint of Nazi eugenics. Drawing on interviews with victims of sterilization and primary documents, this book traces the post-1940s development of eugenic policy and shows that both eugenic arguments and committed eugenicists informed population, welfare, and birth control policy in postwar America. In providing revisionist histories of the choice movement, the anti-population growth movement, and the Great Society programs, this book contributes to public policy and political and intellectual history"--Publisher's description.

Rage to redemption in the sterilization age : a confrontation with American genocide / by Railey, John,author.; Black, Edwin,author of introduction, etc.;
Includes bibliographical references.Nial Cox Ramirez, rendered barren in 1965 by one of America's most aggressive sterilization programs, made nationwide news in the 1970s as she fought for redress. Her landmark case fizzled in the early 1980s. Nial went on, raising a successful daughter, the one child she gave birth to before the state got to her. She never surrendered her dream of justice, but what happened to her and more than 7,600 others in "progressive" North Carolina receded into the background, buried under the cheery press releases the state program relied on before it closed down in 1974. Then, in 2002, a team of reporters at the Winston-Salem Journal gained access to records that exposed, for the first time, the brutal inner workings of this sterilization program that had been backed by their paper. One of those reporters, John Railey, became the editorial page editor of the Journal and made victim compensation his cause. He joined forces with Ramirez, other victims, and state legislator Larry Womble, who kept fighting even after he was almost killed in a car wreck. This is the story of their victory. It's the story of Ramirez and Railey, two unlikely friends joined forever on a faith-based justice journey.
