And children with complex behavior or learning issues can be even more confounding.The last twenty years have seen a huge increase, not only in children with learning and behavior problems, but in children with bewildering combinations of them. These combinations can defy categorization and resist treatment. Figuring these children out can feel like trying to decrypt an especially complex code, without a cypher. Even professionals find it challenging. Child Decoded presents a new kind of resource for a new kind of need. It provides parents with a broader understanding of the issues that may be affecting their children, as well as concise information on who can help and how."--provided by Amazon.com.

Tailspin : the people and forces behind America's fifty-year fall--and those fighting to reverse it / by Brill, Steven,1950-author.(CARDINAL)807671;
Includes bibliographical references and index.The protected and the unprotected -- Meritocracy becomes the new aristocracy -- Casino country -- The greening of the First Amendment -- Making markets efficient, and marginalizing those left behind -- "Lip service" for America's workers -- Dysfunctional democracy -- Moat nation -- Why nothing works -- Broken -- Protecting the most unprotected -- Storming the moats.From the award-winning journalist and best-selling author of "America's Bitter Pill": a tour de force examination of 1) how and why major American institutions no longer serve us as they should, causing a deep rift between the vulnerable majority and the protected few, and 2) how some individuals and organizations are laying the foundation for real, lasting change. In this revelatory narrative covering the years 1967 to 2017, Steven Brill gives us a stunningly cogent picture of the broken system at the heart of our society. He shows us how, over the last half-century, America's core values--meritocracy, innovation, due process, free speech, and even democracy itself--have somehow managed to power its decline into dysfunction. They have isolated our best and brightest, whose positions at the top have never been more secure or more remote. The result has been an erosion of responsibility and accountability, an epidemic of shortsightedness, an increasingly hollow economic and political center, and millions of Americans gripped by apathy and hopelessness. By examining the people and forces behind the rise of big-money lobbying, legal and financial engineering, the demise of private-sector unions, and a hamstrung bureaucracy, Brill answers the question on everyone's mind: How did we end up this way? Finally, he introduces us to those working quietly and effectively to repair the damages. At once a diagnosis of our national ills, a history of their development, and a prescription for a brighter future, "Tailspin" is a work of riveting journalism--and a welcome antidote to political despair.

Arguing that the liberal decisions of the 1960s and early 1970s were an aberration in a larger conservative pattern, Kairys highlights the ongoing erosion of principles and rules typically thought to embody American notions of freedom. Kairys focuses on the people involved, and analyzes these cases to highlight contradictions in conservative legal thinking and practice. He evaluates and criticizes the conservative record, assesses legal reasoning and the rule of law in society, and develops an approach to protection and enforcement of freedom, equality, and democracy.

Pygmalion / by Shaw, Bernard,1856-1950,Author(DLC)n 79006533 ;
One of George Bernard Shaw's best-known plays, Pygmalion is based on ancient Greek mythology. Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era British playwrights. Shaw's updated and revised version of this ancient Greek legend was first presented in England in 1914. Poking fun of the antiquated British class system, it introduces Henry Higgins, a professor of speech and phonetics who takes on a bet that he can transform a bedraggled, cockney flower seller, Eliza Doolittle, into a refined young lady simply by polishing her manners and changing the way she speaks. Their dynamic personalities clash, and the play follows their antics as Higgins imparts his knowledge to a stubborn Eliza, who's happy to learn but reluctant to leave her old ways behind. In the process of convincing society that his creation is a mysterious royal figure, a duchess, Professor Higgins falls in love with his elegant handiwork. Shaw's clever adaptation was a rousing success. His irresistible theme together with brilliant dialogue made Pygmalion one of the most popular comedies in the English language. It was presented on the London and New York stages, and as an entertaining motion picture in its musical version, My Fair Lady. Shaw's most well-known play, and the humorous and fascinating relationship dynamics at play, make it a timeless classic that will inspire generations to come.

Hopkins (1886), the U.S. Supreme Court held that non-citizens had due process rights under the 14th Amendment. the plaintiff, an immigrant from China who had run a laundry service for 22 years, filed suit after he was denied a permit to operate his business. The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that although the laundry permit law was race-neutral, it was applied in a discriminatory fashion. Korematsu and civil liberties: After America was attacked by Japan at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 consigning 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry (two-thirds of them American citizens) to internment camps. Fred Korematsu challenged the internment all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In Korematsu v. United States (1944), the court sided with the government. Decades later, Congress and the U.S. president formally apologized for the internment" -- Container.DVD.
