First words : a parent's step-by-step guide to helping a child with speech and language delays / by Offenbacher, Barbara Levine,1953-(CARDINAL)401768;
This book gives parents the information they need to allow them to stimulate their childs speech and language. Parents are given actual samples of how children with autism and other language delays respond differently to questions and how their responses can be redirected in order to start building connections. Offenbacher explains terms such as speech and language, typical language delay, PDD- Pervasive Developmental Delay, ASD-Autism Spectrum Disorder, Aspergers Syndrome, and ABA- Applied Behavioral Analysis. The book outlines the typical developmental steps of speech and language acquisition, and where parents should begin when starting to help their child. It suggests the types of toys, and experiences that stimulate language, as well as a floor plan to arrange a work area and learning center in their home. It provides check lists for them to evaluate their child every step of the way and set meaningful and attainable goals. This book is not meant to replace professional intervention. But it guides parents in becoming a para-speech partner in maximizing the stimulation their child receives so they develop skills for communicating

COVID wars : America's struggle over public health and personal freedom / by Gruner, Ronald,Author(local)tlcaut1753371548952619236;
A nonpartisan, data-rich analysis of the United States' response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on over 80 charts and historical parallels--from the 1918 Spanish Flu to modern virology--Gruner explores the complex interplay between public health imperatives and individual liberties. The book critiques political leadership across the spectrum, highlights institutional missteps, and examines how differing state policies shaped outcomes. With over 100 pages of appendices and citations, it serves as a comprehensive, dispassionate resource for understanding the pandemic's profound impact on American society.

Assembled by noted authorities on Cherokee, this volume marks an unparalleled contribution to the linguistic analysis, understanding, and preservation of Cherokee language and culture. Cherokee Narratives spans the spectrum of genres, including humor, religion, origin myths, trickster tales, historical accounts, and stories about the Eastern Cherokee language. These stories capture the voices of tribal elders and form a living record of the Cherokee Nation and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians' oral tradition. Each narrative appears in four different formats: the first is interlinear, with each line shown in the Cherokee syllabary, a corresponding roman orthography, and a free English translation; the second format consists of a morpheme-by-morpheme analysis of each word; and the third and fourth formats present the entire narrative in the Cherokee syllabary and in a free English translation. The narratives and their linguistic analysis are a rich source of information for those who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Cherokee syllabary, as well as for students of Cherokee history and culture. By enabling readers at all skill levels to use and reconstruct the Cherokee language, this collection of tales will sustain the life and promote the survival of Cherokee for generations to come." -- Publisher's description.

Practices and procedures for site-specific evaluations of earthquake ground motions / by Matasovic, Neven,1959-(CARDINAL)311143; Hashash, Youssef M. Includes bibliographical references (pages 27-38).Introduction -- Current state of evaluation of site effects on ground motions -- Approach to survey of current practice -- Survey responses and relevant literature -- Conclusions and suggestions for further researchThe current AASHTO specifications for seismic design mandate site-specific evaluation of the earthquake design ground motion (i.e., the acceleration response spectrum) for ground conditions termed Site Class F. In the AASHTO specifications, Site Class F soils include soft clay sites. These AASHTO specifications also allow discretionary site-specific analyses for other ground conditions and a reduction in mapped design ground motions of as much as 33% if justified by a site-specific ground motion analysis. Some state departments of transportation (DOTs) are taking advantage of this site response reduction provision, particularly in cases where pore pressure generation could lead to soil liquefaction-Research sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration

This issue of the TRR also examines a permanent deformation model of asphalt mixtures, perpetual pavement responses to moving wheel loading and contact stresses, truck traffic inputs for mechanistic-empirical pavement design, calibration in the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide, quieter hot-mix asphalt pavements, comparison of a state department of transportation design procedure with mechanistic-empirical pavement design, effect of axle load spectrum characteristics on pavement performance, and predicting alligator fatigue cracking distress. In addition, this TRR highlights the influence of active fillers on the properties of recycled mixes with foamed asphalt, full-depth reclamation with engineered emulsion, and the profile analysis of Arizona Specific Pavement Studies 5 project.
