- Parlor ladies and ebony drudges : African American women, class, and work in a South Carolina community / by Mack, Kibibi Voloria C.,1955-(CARDINAL)835954; Fox-Genovese, Elizabeth,1941-2007,writer of foreword.(CARDINAL)164787;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 215-227) and index.Upper-class African Americans -- Upper-class women's work outside the home -- Upper-class women's work inside the home -- Middle-class African Americans -- Middle-class women's work outside the home -- Middle-class women's work inside the home -- Working-class African Americans -- Working-class women's work outside the home -- Working-class women's work inside the home.Focusing on the community of Orangeburg, South Carolina, from 1880 to 1940 ... explores the often sharp class divisions that developed among African American women in that small, semirural area.Mack's research challenges the conventional thesis that all African American women toiled - and toiled hard - throughout their lives. She shows that this was only true if they belonged to certain socioeconomic classes. In Orangeburg, a significant minority did not have to work outside the home (unless they chose to do so) and that some even had staffs of domestics to do their housework - a situation paralleling that of the town's genteel white women. While the factors of gender and race did restrict the lives of all African American women in Jim Crow Orangeburg, Mack argues, there was no real solidarity across class lines. In fact, as the points out, tensions often arose between women of the upper classes and those of the middle and working classes.

In The emergency, Fisher brings us through his shift, as he works with limited time and resources to treat incoming patients. And, with the rare dual perspective of somebody who also has his hands deep in policy work, Fisher connects these human stories to the sometimes-cruel machinery of care"--

- Amazing grace : the lives of children and the conscience of a nation / by Kozol, Jonathan.(CARDINAL)148318;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 289-306) and index.Amazing Grace is a book about the hearts of children who grow up in the South Bronx - the poorest congressional district of our nation. Without rhetoric, but drawing extensively upon the words of children, parents, and priests, this book does not romanticize or soften the effects of violence and sickness. One fourth of the child-bearing women in the neighborhoods where these children live test positive for HIV. Pediatric AIDS, life-consuming fires, and gang rivalries take a high toll. Several children die during the year in which this narrative takes place. Although it is a gently written work, Amazing Grace makes clear that the postmodern ghetto of America is not a social accident but is created and sustained by greed, neglect, racism, and expedience. It asks us questions that are, at once, political and theological. What is the value of a child's life? What exactly do we plan to do with those whom we appear to have defined as economically and humanly superfluous? How tough do we dare to be?

- Gender play : girls and boys in school / by Thorne, Barrie.(CARDINAL)157890;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 213-228) and index.Children and gender -- Learning from kids -- Boys and girls together, but mostly apart -- Gender separation: why and how -- Creating a sense of "opposite sides" -- Do girls and boys have different cultures? -- Crossing the gender divide -- Lip gloss and "goin' with": becoming teens -- Lessons for adults.You see it in every schoolyard: the girls play only with girls, the boys play only with boys. Why? And what do the kids think about this? Breaking with familiar conventions for thinking about children and gender, Gender Play develops fresh insights into the everyday social worlds of kids in elementary schools in the United States. Barrie Thorne draws on her daily observations in the classroom and on the playground to show how children construct and experience gender in school. With rich detail, she looks at the "play of gender" in the organization of groups of kids and activities - activities such as "chase-and-kiss," "cooties," "goin' with," and teasing. Thorne observes children in schools in working-class communities, emphasizing the experiences of fourth and fifth graders. Most of the children she observed were white, but a sizable minority were Latino, Chicano, or African American. Thorne argues that the organization and meaning of gender are influenced by age, ethnicity, race, sexuality, and social class, and that they shift with social context. She sees gender identity not through the lens of individual socialization or difference, but rather as a social process involving groups of children. Thorne takes us on a fascinating journey of discovery, provides new insights about children, and offers teachers practical suggestions for increasing cooperative mixed-gender interaction.1430L
