Build your village : a guide to finding joy and community in every stage of life / by Romano, Florence Ann,author.(CARDINAL)867501;
"Humans are social creatures. Just as we need water, air, food, and shelter, we need community, yet feelings of isolation and loneliness have been on the rise (exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic), even for people who have full social calendars and large networks. Everyone has heard the phrase "It takes a village," but how exactly do we find our village? In Build Your Village, author Florence Ann Romano posits that a successful support system requires six types of villagers, and she takes the reader step-by-step through the process of creating, nurturing, and, when necessary, rebuilding a village. Exercises and action steps help the reader establish a caring community through meaningful connections. "It takes a village" isn't just a phrase about raising children; it's a call to action for each one of us to find-and become-the villagers needed to build lasting relationships, dispel isolation, and improve overall happiness and well-being"--

Animals that live in social groups / by Kalman, Bobbie,author.(CARDINAL)181024;
"One of the biggest adaptations made by some animals is to live and work together as a group to ensure their survival. This intriguing book shows how social animals communicate and interact with members of their own species. Elephants, dolphins and orcas, monkeys, apes, lions, and wolves, educate their young, work together to find food, and take care of their group members. Smaller animals that work together in microsocieties include termites, ants, bees, and wasps. Students will have fun comparing their own social groups to those found in nature. Fascinating photographs accompany thought-provoking questions and activities."--Ages 8-11.Grades 4 to 6.IG860LAccelerated Reader AR

Go together : how the concept of Ubuntu will change how you live, work, and lead / by Richards, Shola,author.(CARDINAL)413632;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Part One: Why we must go together: We can always do better: the death of civility ; One word that will change everything: the invincibility of Ubuntu ; It is always safer to stand up: the uncomfortable truth about saving the world -- Part two: Live together: Fear or love: the only decision that matters ; When your beliefs become irrelevant: the unpleasant reality behind good intentions ; You belong in any room you walk into: the importance of healing yourself first -- Part three: Work together: Becoming the hero: why you must start before you're ready ; The master plan: eight keys to unlocking Ubuntu at work ; Your power is not for sale: dealing with enemies of Ubuntu -- Part four: Lead together: Kindness is not weakness: the heart of the Ubuntu leader ; The power of presence: the Ubuntu leader's secret weapon ; When you feel like you can't continue: the necessity of resilience.The African philosophy of Ubuntu embraces the belief that we are universally connected to each other. Richards suggests it could transform the way we treat others, making us kinder and more respectful to others, on and off the job. He believes that the illusion that we are more different than similar is eroding our ability to truly live a productive and satisfying life. Discover how this simple concept could change our own behavior-- and the world around us. -- adapted from back cover.

How change happens / by Sunstein, Cass R.,author.(CARDINAL)201957;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Norms and values -- Unleashed -- The law of group polarization -- The expressive function of law -- The uses and limits of nudges -- Nudging : a very short guide -- Forcing choices -- Welfare -- Nudges that fail -- Ethics -- Control -- Coercion -- On preferring A to B, while also preferring B to A -- Excursions -- Transparency -- Precautions -- Moral heuristics -- Rights -- Partyism.How does social change happen? When do social movements take off? Sexual harassment was once something that women had to endure; now a movement has risen up against it. White nationalist sentiments, on the other hand, were largely kept out of mainstream discourse; now there is no shortage of media outlets for them. In this book, with the help of behavioral economics, psychology, and other fields, Cass Sunstein casts a bright new light on how change happens. Sunstein focuses on the crucial role of social norms-and on their frequent collapse. When norms lead people to silence themselves, even an unpopular status quo can persist. Then one day, someone challenges the norm-a child who exclaims that the emperor has no clothes; a woman who says ٢me too.٣ Sometimes suppressed outrage is unleashed, and long-standing practices fall. Sometimes change is more gradual, as ٢nudges٣ help produce new and different decisions-apps that count calories; texted reminders of deadlines; automatic enrollment in green energy or pension plans. Sunstein explores what kinds of nudges are effective and shows why nudges sometimes give way to bans and mandates. Finally, he considers social divisions, social cascades, and ٢partyism,٣ when identification with a political party creates a strong bias against all members of an opposing party-which can both fuel and block social change.

The marriage pact [large print] : a novel / by Richmond, Michelle,1970-author.(CARDINAL)343208;
Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as The Pact. The goal of The Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense. Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. . . . Never mention The Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to The Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And The Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.
