God and government : twenty-five years of fighting for equality, secularism, and freedom of conscience / by Lynn, Barry W.,author.(CARDINAL)750522;
Includes bibliographical references and index."A central player in every major church-state-separation battle for decades, the Rev. Barry W. Lynn understands the complexities of this divisive issue like few others. As a long-time activist, a civil rights lawyer, and an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, he offers a unique perspective and a wealth of experience on church-state controversies. In this lively book, he has compiled his writings from various sources to explore in depth the many ways religious extremists have attempted to erode individual liberties. The topics range from publicly-promoted prayer to efforts to undermine public education and replace it with taxpayer-subsidized vouchers for religious schools, interfering with end-of-life and reproductive rights, censorship, and belligerence directed against nonbelievers and minorities. Lynn concludes that the ultimate goal of these extremist forces--consisting mainly of the Protestant Religious Right and the Roman Catholic hierarchy--is the creation of a corporate theocracy, a decidedly undemocratic system of government in which nonconservative Christians, along with humanist, feminists, and the LGBTQ community, are relegated to second-class status in America"--

The chance of salvation : a history of conversion in America / by Mullen, Lincoln A.,1984-author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 289-354) and index.Introduction : Religion as choice -- Prayer: Protestant converts and the sinner's prayer -- Gift: Cherokee converts and the reception of missions -- Hope: African American converts and the jubilee -- Kingdom: Mormon converts and the primitive gospel -- Sincerity: Jewish converts and resistance to missions -- Repose: Catholic converts and the rejection of the sect system -- Conclusion: "Maybes are the essence of the situation"The Chance of Salvation offers a history of conversions in the United States which shows how religious identity came to be a matter of choice. Shortly after the American Revolution, people in the United States increasingly encountered an expanded array of religious options. Evangelical Protestants began an effort to convert Americans, while developing new practices that emphasized conversion as an immediate choice. Their missionary effort extended to Native American nations such as the Cherokee in the Southeast, who received Christianity on their own terms. Enslaved and newly freed African Americans likewise created a variety of Christian conversion that was centered on religious hope and eschatological expectation. Mormons, drawing on earlier Protestant practices and beliefs, enthusiastically proselytized for a new tradition that emphasized individual choice and free will. By uncovering the way that religious identity is structured as an obligatory decision, this book explains why Americans change their religions so much, and why the United States is both highly religious in terms of religious affiliation and very secular in the sense that no religion is an unquestioned default.--

Pluralism in peril : challenges to an American ideal / by The Aspen Institute.Justice and Society Program.Inclusive America Project,author.; Chertoff, Meryl Justin,editor.; Ralph, Allison K.,editor.;
Includes appendices (pages 137-156).Part 1: Emerging Fields of Practice -- Part 2: Tool for Analysis and Advocacy -- Part 3: Visions for 2028Pluralism in Peril, a new report by the Inclusive America Project, addresses how our nation can maintain its historical commitment to embracing people of all faith backgrounds against a backdrop of polarization. Religious pluralism may be under threat, but effective tools and strategies are available to defenders of this core American value. Pluralism in Peril offers guidance to community and interfaith leaders, youth-serving organizations, philanthropists, and state and local officials on specific action steps to build a more resilient, trust-based environment that fully incorporates American religious minorities. Essays explore ways to increase basic religious literacy, promote allyship and community resilience, and build bridges between youth of different faith traditions. Pluralism in Peril’s authors come from across the political spectrum and include former government officials, religious leaders, interfaith activists, and scholars. While they do not agree on everything, they all insist that America’s religious diversity keeps us strong and that an attack on one faith is an attack on all faiths.

Letters to a Birmingham jail : a response to the words and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. / by Loritts, Bryan C.,editor.(CARDINAL)468837;

Much has transpired in the half-century since, and progress has been made in the issues that were close to Dr. King’s heart. Thankfully, the burning crosses, biting police dogs, and angry mobs of that day are long gone. But in their place, passivity has emerged. A passivity that must be addressed. That’s the aim of Letters to a Birmingham Jail. A collection of essays written by men of various ethnicities and ages, this book encourages us to pursue Christ exalting diversity. Each contribution recognizes that only the cross and empty tomb of Christ can bring true unity, and each notes that the gospel demands justice in all its forms. This was a truth that Dr. King fought and gave his life for, and this is a truth that these modern day "drum majors for justice" continue to beat.--Publisher
