- Whatcha mean, what's a zine? : the art of making zines and mini comics / by Todd, Mark,1970-author.(CARDINAL)702484; Watson, Esther Pearl,1973-author.;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 103-104).A zine is a handmade magazine or mini-comic about anything you can imagine: favorite bands, personal stories, subcultures, or collections. They contain diary entries, rants, interviews, and stories. They can be by one person or many, found in stores, traded at comic conventions, exchanged with friends, or given away for free. Zines are not a new idea: they've been around for years under various names (chapbooks, flyers, pamphlets). People with independent ideas have been getting their word out since before there were printing presses. This book is for anyone who wants to create their own zine. It's for learning tips and tricks from contributors who have been at the forefront of the zine movement. It's for learning how to design and print your own zine so you can put it in others' hands. It's for anyone who has something to say.--From publisher description.Accelerated Reader AR

- Indelible ink : the trials of John Peter Zenger and the birth of America's free press / by Kluger, Richard,author.(CARDINAL)130973;
Includes bibliographical references and index.In 1733, struggling printer John Peter Zenger scandalized colonial New York by launching the New-York Weekly Journal, which assailed the British governor as corrupt and arrogant -- a direct challenge to the prevailing law against "seditious libel", which criminalized any criticism of the government. Fronting for a group of powerful antiroyalist politicians, Zenger was jailed for nine months before his landmark trial in August 1735, when he was brilliantly defended by Philadelphia lawyer Alexander Hamilton. In this book, Richard Kluger recreates this dramatic clash that marked the birth of press freedom in America and its role in vanquishing colonial tyranny. Here is an enduring lesson that resounds to this day on the vital importance of free public expression as the underpinning of democracy. --

- From the mountains to the sea : the historic restoration of the Penobscot River / by Taylor, Peter,author.(CARDINAL)510291;
On June 14, 2016, for the first time in two centuries, an Atlantic salmon swam through the town of Howland, Maine bound for spawning grounds that had been inaccessible for generations. Along the riverbank, hundreds of people cheered as they helped celebrate the event marking the culmination of a remarkable seventeen-year effort by an unlikely and diverse alliance of people and organizations. From Mountains to the Sea tells the inside story of the Penobscot River Restoration Project drawing on interviews with more than fifty participants who helped navigate local politics and federal budgets and examines the challenges, compromises, and key turning points in the project to ultimately balance social and economy values and serve as a global model for large-scale ecosystem restoration. --Amazon.com

- White walls : a memoir about motherhood, daughterhood, and the mess in between / by Batalion, Judith,author.(CARDINAL)549446;
"A memoir of mothers and daughters, hoarding, and healing. Judy Batalion grew up in a house filled with endless piles of junk and layers of crumbs and dust; suffocated by tuna fish cans, old papers and magazines, swivel chairs, tea bags, clocks, cameras, printers, VHS tapes, ballpoint pens...obsessively gathered and stored by her hoarder mother. The first chance she had, she escaped the clutter to create a new identity--one made of order, regimen, and clean white walls. Until, one day, she found herself enmeshed in life's biggest chaos: motherhood. Confronted with the daunting task of raising a daughter after her own dysfunctional childhood, Judy reflected on not only her own upbringing but the lives of her mother and grandmother, Jewish Polish immigrants who had escaped the Holocaust. What she discovered astonished her. The women in her family, despite their differences, were even more closely connected than she ever knew--from her grandmother Zelda to her daughter of the same name. And, despite the hardships of her own mother-daughter relationship, it was that bond that was slowly healing her old wounds. Told with heartbreaking honesty and humor, this is Judy's poignant account of her trials negotiating the messiness of motherhood and the indelible marks that mothers and daughters make on each other's lives"--

Includes bibliographical references and index.Charting developments in conservation from the mid-sixteenth century to the present. This fascinating volume presents a wide-ranging overview of one of the lesser-known yet fundamental disciplines of art history: conservation. What happens when art ages? Bringing together some of the leading experts in the field, seventeen essays chart a journey through the theoretical, aesthetic, and technical debates surrounding the conservation of the work of the old masters. The problem of how to look after paintings as they grow old is a historically complex one. Should they be "restored" to their original glory, or should their appearance acknowledge the patina of time? What is to be done with damp and dirt, with rotten panels and yellowing varnishes? The development of conservation is entwined with the development of art history itself, as both deal with the interpretation of the past and its preservation for the future. Masterpieces like Jan and Hubert van Eyck's The Ghent Altarpiece or Rembrandt's The Night Watch have been treated and mistreated many times in their long lives. By the nineteenth century, the growing knowledge of the techniques employed by the old masters had a profound influence on the treatments applied to their works. In the same period, the birth of national galleries as public institutions entrusted with the collective heritage led to the need to preserve large numbers of paintings and establish conservation departments rooted in scientific research. By the mid-twentieth century, the materials and techniques of painting were utterly transformed, demanding fresh approaches to their preservation. A discipline that sits at the crossroads of art, science, philosophy, and technology, modern conservation is the result of an ongoing collaboration between conservators, scientists, and art historians following rigorous ethical standards and training programs.
