The Negro of the old South, a bit of period history ... / by Eppes, Susan Bradford,1845 or 1846-1942.(CARDINAL)223457;
Old Black mammy -- The Negro from barbarism to slavery, from slavery to freedom -- Life on the old plantation -- High days and holidays on the old plantation -- Aunt Ginnie the housekeeper -- Uncle Davie the head gardener -- Aunt Rachel and her babies in the day nursery at Horseshoe Plantation -- Plantation caste -- The day nursery at Pine Hill Plantation -- Dear Black mammy -- The dark side of slavery -- When Laurence ran away -- Pine Hill Plantation at the beginning of the War Between the States -- When our eyes were opened -- What a day may bring forth -- The first taste of freedom -- Carpet-bagger days in Florida -- Aunt Dinah's visit to town -- The tenant system -- An unexpected visitor at Pine Hill Plantation -- The religion of the Negro race -- The Southern Negro as a soldier in France and at home -- What education has done for the colored citizen. The Negro of the Old South, written by a Mrs. Nicholas Ware Eppes, and published in 1925, is a book whose only relevance lies in its bias. The author explains her authority on the subject of slavery by stating that she is, "one of the lauded, much abused, much despised, and much ridiculed classes -- one of the blue-booded children of the Old South, surrounded for many years by the slaves who were as truly ours as anything else we owned and served by them in many ways, 'sence freedom drapped'." Such is the tone throughout the whole of this favorable recollection. Cooks are referred to as 'pets, ' the Klu Klux Klan is described as 'the great third kingdom, ' and the crime of lynching was never known by the African American in the south "until these apostles of negro equality (carpet-baggers) put it in the minds of the newly made citizens." The only historical analysis of slavery is given to suggest that the climate, the 'mother country' (Britain), the "New Englanders who sought a market for their wares," and others had forced the institution of slavery upon the South. -- Melissa Wilks and Alexander Wray-Kerr (Monticello High School Scholars Program, Spring 2003).

What I know for sure / by Winfrey, Oprah,author.(CARDINAL)347260;
"After film critic Gene Siskel asked her, "What do you know for sure?" Oprah Winfrey began writing the "What I Know For Sure" column in O, The Oprah Magazine. Saying that the question offered her a way to take "stock of her life," Oprah has penned one column a month over the last fourteen years, years in which she retired The Oprah Winfrey Show (the highest-rated program of its kind in history), launched her own television network, became America's only black billionaire, was awarded an honorary degree from Harvard University and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, watched friends and colleagues come and go, lost beloved pets and adopted new ones, and celebrated milestone birthdays. Throughout it all, she's continued to offer her profound and inspiring words of wisdom in her "What I Know For Sure" column in O, The Oprah Magazine.Now, for the first time, these thoughtful gems have been revised, updated, and collected in What I Know For Sure, a beautiful book packed with insight and revelation from Oprah Winfrey. Organized by theme--joy, resilience, connection, gratitude, possibility, awe, clarity, and power--these essays offer a rare and powerful glimpse into the mind of one of the world's most extraordinary women. Candid, moving, exhilarating, uplifting, and dynamic, the words Oprah shares in What I Know For Sure shimmer with the sort of wisdom and truth that readers will turn to again and again. "--

Invasive pythons in the United States : ecology of an introduced predator / by Dorcas, Michael E.,1963-(CARDINAL)271885; Willson, John D.,1979-(CARDINAL)329273;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 144-146) and index.About pythons -- Natural history of Indian and Burmese pythons -- Scientific research on pythons -- Burmese pythons in the United States -- Control methods for Burmese pythons -- Pythons in the pet and skin trades -- Other species at risk of becoming established in the United States."Most people think of pythons as giant snakes in distant tropical jungles, but Burmese pythons, which can reach lengths of over twenty feet and weigh over two hundred pounds, are now thriving in southern Florida. These natives of Asia are commonly kept as pets and presumably escaped or were released in the Everglades. Pythons are now common in this region; widespread throughout hundreds of square miles, they are breeding and appear to be expanding their range. Pythons are voracious predators that feed on a variety of native wildlife including wading birds, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and even alligators. Their presence has drawn dramatic media attention and stoked fears among the public that pythons may threaten not just native species but humans as well. Despite this widespread concern, information on pythons has been limited to a few scientific publications and news coverage that varies widely in fact and accuracy. With Invasive Pythons in the United States, Michael E. Dorcas and John D. Willson provide the most reliable, up-to-date, and scientifically grounded information on invasive pythons. Filled with over two hundred color photographs and fifteen figures and maps, the book will help general readers and the scientific community better understand these fascinating animals and their troubling presence in the United States."--Provided by Publisher.

Raw dog : the naked truth about hot dogs / by Loftus, Jamie,author.(CARDINAL)866611;
Includes bibliographical references."Part travelogue, part culinary history, all capitalist critique-comedian Jamie Loftus's debut, Raw Dog, will take you on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2021, and reveal what the creation, culture, and class influence of hot dogs says about America now. Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They're high culture, they're low culture, they're sports food, they're kids' food, they're hangover food, and they're deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America's Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can't avoid the great American hot dog. Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelog documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they're served today. From avocado and spice in the West to ass-shattering chili in the East to an entire salad on a slice of meat in Chicago, Loftus, her pets, and her ex eat their way across the country during the strange summer of 2021. It's a brief window into the year between waves of a plague that the American government has the resources to temper, but not the interest. So grab a dog, lay out your picnic blanket, and dig into the delicious and inevitable product of centuries of violence, poverty, and ambition, now rolling around at your local 7-Eleven. The hardcover edition of Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs includes gorgeous endpapers, an illustrated case,as well as illustrations by the author throughout. A terribly nasty business / by Seales, Julia,author.(CARDINAL)872544;
"After achieving her lifelong dream of solving a murder, bringing a killer to justice, and proving she is not, in fact, a morbid creep, Beatrice Steele feels like everything is finally falling into place. She's traded her etiquette-obsessed community of Swampshire for the big city of London, accompanied by her ever-trusty chaperone, Miss Bolton. They've settled in a lovely neighborhood, Sweetbriar, known for its proximity to the Sweet Majestic theater, picturesque pleasure gardens, and an unfortunate infestation of flying squirrels. But Beatrice's favorite part is that Sweetbriar is also home to D.S. Investigations, the new office she opened with the prickly, annoyingly logical Inspector Drake to solve the city's brutally thrilling crimes. However, nothing is turning out how Beatrice imagined it would. Sir Huxley, famed gentleman inspector and Beatrice's former crush, is still considered the real investigator in London, so the only cases left for Beatrice and Drake are lost pets and spectacles. Not that Beatrice has much time for crime-solving, anyways, as her mother still expects her to find an eligible (rich) husband to protect their family from destitution. Beatrice is struggling to balance all the demands on her and begins to wonder if she can become a true detective in a city that feels full of false promises. That is until a string of murders thrusts Beatrice and Drake into the center of a scandal that pits the neighborhood's wealthiest against the arts community, spreading fear and chaos throughout the city. As they follow the trail through bewildering ballrooms, secretive shops, and odd operas, Beatrice must survive threats to her partnership, her business, and her place in society to break the case--before it's too late"--
