Pathologies of power : health, human rights, and the new war on the poor : with a new preface by the author / by Farmer, Paul,1959-2022.;

Paul Farmer, a physician and anthropologist with twenty years of experience working in Haiti, Peru, and Russia, argues that promoting the social and economic rights of the world's poor is the most important human rights struggle of our times. With passionate eyewitness accounts from the prisons of Russia and the beleaguered villages of Haiti and Chiapas, this book links the lived experiences of individual victims to a broader analysis of structural violence. Farmer challenges conventional thinking within human rights circles and exposes the relationships between political and economic injustice, on one hand, and the suffering and illness of the powerless, on the other. Farmer shows that the same social forces that give rise to epidemic diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis also sculpt risk for human rights violations. He illustrates the ways that racism and gender inequality in the United States are embodied as disease and death. Yet this book is far from a hopeless inventory of abuse. Farmer's disturbing examples are linked to a guarded optimism that new medical and social technologies will develop in tandem with a more informed sense of social justice. Otherwise, he concludes, we will be guilty of managing social inequality rather than addressing structural violence. Farmer's urgent plea to think about human rights in the context of global public health and to consider critical issues of quality and access for the world's poor should be of fundamental concern to a world characterized by the bizarre proximity of surfeit and suffering.1360L

You are not alone : the NAMI guide to navigating mental health with advice from experts and wisdom from real people and families / by Duckworth, Ken,author.(CARDINAL)857810; National Alliance on Mental Illness.(CARDINAL)857358;
Includes bibliographical references (pages 389-400) and index."Written with authority and compassion, this is the essential resource for individuals and families seeking expert guidance on diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, featuring inspiring, true stories from real people in their own words. Millions of people in the United States are affected by mental illness every year, and the Covid-19 pandemic only further exposed the shortcomings of the American mental health system. Too many are confused, afraid, and overwhelmed, with many asking themselves the same questions: What does it mean when different doctors give me different diagnoses? What if my insurance won't cover my treatment? Will I ever feel better? Families and friends are often left in the dark about how best to help their loved ones, from dealing with financial and logistical issues, to handling the emotional challenges of loving someone who is suffering. You Are Not Alone is here to offer help. Written by Dr. Ken Duckworth with the wisdom of a psychiatrist and the vulnerability of a peer, this comprehensive guide centers the poignant lived experiences of over 125 individuals from across the country whose first-person stories illustrate the diversity of mental health journeys. This book also provides. Practical guidance on dealing with a vast array of mental health conditions and navigating care. Research-based evidence on what treatments and approaches work. Insight and advice from renowned clinical experts and practitioners. This singular resource -- the first book from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and with all sales proceeds going back to the NAMI community -- is a powerful reminder that help is here, and you are never alone."--

More than 40 million people in the United States suffer from mental health problems--yet less than half receive adequate care and treatment. Even with the most advanced medical care in the world, social stigma still surrounds psychiatric problems and this, combined with a lack of understanding, perpetuates a national mental health crisis affecting those in need and their families. Dr. Barnes and Dr. Wills have written this necessary and comprehensive, practical guide to educate and help everyone better understand mental health.

Pathology of the elites : how the arrogant classes plan to run your life / by Beran, Michael Knox.(CARDINAL)648780;
Includes bibliographical references and index.In this bracing collection of provocative essays, Michael Knox Beran examines the false benevolence that characterizes the power classes in contemporary America. Their enlightened pity for their fellow citizens, he charges, conceals an instinct for power rather than compassion. Mr. Beran argues that today's elites have come to rely on a social philosophy that reduces people to a mass of social groups and types, obscures their individual humanity, and makes them easier to manipulate. While they tragically conceive their desire for authority as a form of virtue, the elite classes have set about remaking schools, rewriting the U.S. Constitution, dehumanizing charity, and making war on tradition in the name of a crude form of Social Darwinism. -- Product Description.
