And the good news is ... : lessons and advice from the bright side / by Perino, Dana,author.(CARDINAL)410480;
"From her years as a presidential press secretary to her debates with colleagues on Fox News' The Five, Dana Perino reveals the lessons she's learned that have guided her through life, including stories from behind the scenes at the White House with President George W. Bush that the cameras never captured. Thoughtful, inspiring and often surprising, AND THE GOOD NEWS IS ... traces Dana's unlikely journey through politics, the White House, and television. She has an uncanny ability for knowing what to say and how best to say it. A recurring theme in AND THE GOOD NEWS IS ... is that planning has never worked for Dana; every time she has made a plan, something unexpected-and often better-has happened. AND THE GOOD NEWS IS ... blends a candid self-portrait with advice for allowing one's very best personality traits to shine through, emphasizing that dignity and civility are choices we make for ourselves."--Introduction -- Wide-open spaces -- Love at first flight -- Stepping up to the podium -- The five -- Take it from me-- please -- Civility, lost and found -- Unafraid to be right -- One more thing.

And the good news is-- : lessons and advice from the bright side / by Perino, Dana,author.(CARDINAL)410480;
Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction -- Wide-open spaces -- Love at first flight -- Stepping up to the podium -- The five -- Take it from me-- please -- Civility, lost and found -- Unafraid to be right -- One more thing.From her years as the presidential press secretary to her debates with colleagues on Fox News' The Five, Dana Perino reveals the lessons she's learned that have guided her through life, kept her level-headed, and led to her success, even in the face of adversity. From facing professional challenges and confronting personal fears to stepping up to a podium for a President, Dana has come to expect the unexpected and has an uncanny ability to find the good news in any tough situation. Her memoir takes us from her Western childhood in Wyoming and Colorado to a chance meeting on an airplane that changes her life entirely. Then, with refreshing honesty and humor, she recounts her frustration with a string of unsatisfying jobs and living circumstances until a key career tip leads her back to Washington, D.C. to work for the Bush Administration. Dana also shares here her best work and life lessons -- tips that will help you to get your point across convincingly while allowing your own grace and personality to shine through. As someone who still believes in working together to solve the problems our nation faces, Dana offers clear, practical advice on how to restore civility to our personal and public conversations.

Corolla and the Currituck Outer Banks / by Gray, R. Wayne,author.(CARDINAL)307006; Gray, Nancy Beach,author.(CARDINAL)335254;
A colonial foothold -- Guns blazing in open spaces -- Looking seaward -- Settlement on the outer fringes -- Isolated villages -- A pristine piece of beach -- Biggest sandbox in the world -- From road to real estate explosion.The Currituck Outer Banks was once a beach land wilderness inhabited by indigenous Poteskeet people before being explored by the Spanish and claimed by the English. Early settlers made a hardscrabble living by small-scale fishing, farming, processing whales, and salvaging shipwrecks. Life changed in 1828 when an inlet closed, and thousands of ducks and geese descended upon the sound's waters. Locals took up wildfowl market hunting. Northern sportsmen bought marshland acres and built exclusive shooting clubs. The most ostentatious, the Whalehead Club in the heart of Corolla, embodies that golden era, which lasted 100 years. The area became more than a hunting destination when the first lifesaving station was built at Jones Hill to mitigate the loss of life from shipwrecks. Further shoreline protection came when the red-bricked Currituck Beach Lighthouse was completed in 1875. By 1970, extreme isolation and a population that fell to 15 people allowed wild horses to flourish. In 1984, a controversial paved road to the northern beaches encouraged rapid development and put the Corolla area on the map as a sought-after vacation destination. --Amazon.com.
