- Arithmetic / by Lockhart, Paul,author.(CARDINAL)845948;
Educator Paul Lockhart's goal is to demystify arithmetic: to bring the subject to life in a fun and accessible way, and to reveal its profound and simple beauty, as seen through the eyes of a modern research mathematician. The craft of arithmetic arises from our natural desire to count, arrange, and compare quantities. Over the centuries, humans have devised a wide variety of strategies for representing and manipulating numerical information: tally marks, rocks and beads, marked-value and place-value systems, as well as mechanical and electronic calculators. Arithmetic traces the history and development of these various number languages and calculating devices and examines their comparative advantages and disadvantages, providing readers with an opportunity to develop not only their computational skills but also their own personal tastes and preferences. The book is neither a training manual nor an authoritative history, but rather an entertaining survey of ideas and methods for the reader to enjoy and appreciate. Written in a lively conversational style, Arithmetic is a fun and engaging introduction to both practical techniques as well as the more abstract mathematical aspects of the subject.--Things -- Language -- Repetition -- Tribes -- Egypt -- Rome -- China and Japan -- India -- Europe -- Multiplication -- Division -- Machines -- Fractions -- Negative numbers -- The art of counting.

Donald Duck gets a lesson in math appreciation when he is shown the relevance of math in everyday life. Donald wanders into a mysterious land filled with numbers, shapes, and peculiar symbols. "The Spirit of Adventure" (narrator) informs the skeptical duck that he is about to embark on a journey through the wonderland of mathematics. Donald is whisked back to ancient Greece to meet Pythagoras, the father of math and music. After eavesdropping on a secret meeting of Pythagoreans and turning their serene musical trio into a riotous quartet, Donald continues on his journey. He takes on numerous roles, including art critic, nature observer, billiards player, baseball player, and even Lewis Carroll's Alice. Through his adventures in Mathmagic Land, Donald comes to appreciate how measurements, calculations, shapes, and ratios contribute to music, architecture and art, nature, games, and inventions of all kinds, as well as the role of math in the future.Grade level: 4-12.DVD.

- Determination of bridge response using acceleration data / by Faulkner, Brent C.; Virginia.Department of Transportation.(CARDINAL)291718; Virginia Transportation Research Council.(CARDINAL)195142;
Includes bibliographical references (page 14).Final report.Knowledge of the actual displacement response of a bridge subjected to random traffic loading is useful in evaluating bridge performance and serviceability. However, mounting displacement transducers is difficult, and the feasibility of and cost associated with such instrumentation are often problems. This research evaluated various methods to calculate the displacement response of a bridge using measured acceleration data. Methods included the use of integration schemes and the correction algorithms necessary for accurately determining displacements. Corrections are needed since any recorded signal contains error and the initial conditions of a structural system are not always known. Different numerical integration schemes and correction algorithms were applied to acceleration signals developed analytically, and these methods were then evaluated using acceleration signals recorded from laboratory tests. Finally, the methods were applied to acceleration data recorded from a field test of a highway bridge. In each case, the calculated displacement response was compared to the measured or exact displacement response to provide a basis for comparison. From the insight gained in this investigation, recommendations were made concerning the accurate determination of the displacement response of a bridge using accelerometer data.Sponsored by Virginia Department of Transportation. Amazon's business model is deceptively simple: make online shopping so easy and convenient that customers won't think twice. It can almost be summed up by the button on every page: Buy now with one click. Why has Amazon been so successful? Much of it has to do with Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder, whose unique combination of character traits and business strategy have driven Amazon to the top of the online retail world. Originally a computer nerd rather than a businessman, he had the vision to capitalize on the untapped online marketplace for bookselling and continues to discover new market opportunities, from groceries to auto parts. He's a calculating machine, high energy, passionate, highly aggressive, and out to radically transform retail. Through numerous interviews with Amazon employees, competitors, and observers, Richard Brandt has deciphered how Bezos thinks, what drives his actions, and how he makes decisions. Anyone in business can learn a lot from the example of Amazon's ongoing evolution "--Provided by publisher.
